I say we adopt a rule outlawing all weapons. Erm... how do we enforce that again?
We're toolmakers, from sticks and stones on down the line we will always have people who make weapons. What an absurd proposition. |

The Problem is that WE LOVE TO FIGHT.
It's all about it. |

That's a gross generalization there, a_decent_1.
I don't know about the rest of the world, but I for one hate fights. I avoid them if possible. The only people I know of that are hell-bent on war and fighting are the politicians who have something to gain from it, and the stereotypical charicatures of bloodthirsty-blow-everything-up commanders that are displayed in some movies and T.V. programs. That's not to say that some military professionals aren't like that, but I haven't met any of them personally.

Well ok then, modify a_decent_1's generalisation slightly - we love dealing death.
The 20th century was characterised by the development of ever more impersonal ways of doing it from the production line slaughter of the Holocaust to satellite-guided cruise missiles. If there's one constant in human history it is that we kill each other. Furthermore, it seems that as the world becomes more civilized, the rate at which we do this only increases. We may not love fighting anymore, but we just find ways to kill each other without needing to. [ 05-26-2005, 07:16 AM: Message edited by: shamrock_uk ] |

firestormalpha,
Politicians are the people who run a country (i know the common man also plays its part, but politicians are the one who decide) So If the Politicans want Modern Arms and Weapons and want to fight, We are living in a dangerous world. |

Matt has a weapon. His neighbour John has a weapon. Each of them thinks the other one is out to get him. So how the hell do you propose those two lay down their weapons? Now let's say we stop supplying them with bullets. It's only a matter of time before John gets his hands on a heat press and starts making his own ammo. Then we have an imbalance, John can attack Matt and kill him, and Matt won't have any chance to defend. Now that Matt is dead, john is the king of the hill. He enjoys it. There is absolutely no way one can stepmup to John and take his weapon, the very thing that made him "the man". So face it, dreaming about banning weapons is just that, dreaming. It can't and won't happen.

Bozos is right on.
As for the "we love to fight" statement -- sure we do. I, for one, have seen too many years since my last fist fight. I'm itching, I tell ya. As for Shamrock's statements about impersonal ways of killing each other, and increases in killing, I've got to disagree. We've sadly seen a sharp downturn in how many humans die due to strife each year if you look at it as a percentage of population. I think that, on balance, we are simply not killing each other enough. I see the end of human strife and dying as the beginning of the end of the world. Of course, I'll utilize all technology I can to live as long as I can. And, because we're all selfish like that, the world is bound to go to hell in a handbasket at some point. |

Step outside timber
![]() Now weapons have been invented, how do we uninvent them? Has anything ever been uninvented? Do we allow officers of the law to use weapons to arrest a physically stronger criminal? Or do we expect PC plod 1.6 metres and 75kilos to manhandle a 2 metre 110kilo psychopath?
