The main reason for downloading the Grandmastery Patch is to restore the proficiency system to that of BG1.

** +2 dmg, +1 THACO bonus and an extra 1/2 attack

***** +5 dmg, +3 THACO bonus and one extra attack

This patch was created by David Gaider, one of the game designers, and is found at Baldurdash, a website maintained by Kevin Dorner. It basically has patches to debug bugs that the Official Patch did not cover.

Although I agree with your point I actually prefer fighters, why? The beserker kit- this is my favorite kit in SOA but I don't prefer it because they get grandmastery(although that's nice) but because of the enrage skill-very useful.

Just out of curiosity, are NPC's and monsters affected by this patch as well?

I'm not entirely sure, but I'm pretty sure that monsters don't get proficiency points, per se. Well, it may affect some of the NPCs who are of a definable race and class, such as that gut from Nalia's keep who went insane and tries to kill you. But that's just a guess.
