Yah I remember it. They then hired the guy, I heard. The world is kinda like the WoW world, it's neo-tech with clockwork robots and stuff like the goblin engineering. They used this world in Dragonshard. I prefer classic fantasy myself but I got used to it with WoW and it was 'placed' so well into Azeroth I accepted it totally.

I totally hate that guy and his world. His success is frustrating.

Why? Because he saw his opportunity and took it? Because he made a world that hundreds of thousands enjoy?

Yes. I've been a DM a long time and I'm also writing. I'm jealous of his skill and success. You could say I see him as a successfull rival.

I guess I do too then. I am not so much jealous but a little skeptical as to why WotC chose this world as winner.

The FR world was and is thriving, from novels to campaigns, to game-world settings and yet they market this new world with all the latest D&D games, forcing us to deal with it or miss out on the new stuff. I never got the memo. that the realms weren't an enjoyable place to adventure anymore.

Some could say "Maybe they wanted to start something fresh and new", but why start from scratch when the setting they had was teeming - absolutely riddled with well known and loved characters, lore and adventure opportunities? I don't get it.

I would not have played on FR. I liked FR in the 1980s when it came out, but it has become too Monty Haul. If I'm going to trip over +5 swords everywhere I turn, I may as well play a cartoon game. The thing that inspired me most by Crimson Blade's post was that a Level 4 quest was "very hard."

I hope DDO doesn't have the equipment micromanagement that WOW does. If you're going for realism, then realize that you don't upgrade swords and armor every 3 days. Maintain and repair them, that's fine, but the equipment narkiness of WoW bothers me. I'd rather be adventuring, and know my equipment is set for a few levels.

Blade, you've almost got me sold I tell ya.

Here's one thing we should do -- coordinate this on the FRONT END so that we IW'ers end up on the same server for a change.

I agree, and I think Wizards of the Coast agrees too, because they modified the setting for the 3rd Edition. I didn't really look at the setting, but it seemed more balanced and politically realistic. I wonder why they're not writing novels about that version.

We better all do, because if people split all over like they did in WoW even thought I warned people about it, then I'll be really annoyed.

When its released we can put up a sticky for sign up and get a guild going on there from the get go.

Before it's released. When the WoW open beta ended and the game was about to come out, I posted and proposed we all chose the same server, but no one was interested in chosing before the game came out. Once a new game come out, you make your first character, play a couple of hours and meet new people, you don't want to drop it and start somewhere else.

As I predicted, once WoW came out, no one was willing to switch servers.

While I agree that realism is favourable, the level 4 quests being "very hard' is not D&D as we know it. Secondly, any MMO that is too hard will not be successful. Nor would the reverse be a success (too easy) since there is no challenge. There needs to be a good balance or it will flop. XP debt is no fun. If the game makes it to where newbies amass huge amounts of debt simply for starting out, then there will be trouble.

Now, they probably won't do that (if they even have a debt system it most likely won't kick in till later or they may do what WoW did - which was remove xp debt altogether adding to its worldwide attraction). My point is that I am all for realism but much that is akin to real life doesn't work in MMO's, period. Huge, long, boring treks across country are realistic but game develepors now concede that however more 'real' they may make it, they are no fun. Neither is dying again and again. You don't play the game to die, nor to win, you play the game to roleplay your character and ultimately see him through as he grows in this online world.
