Jerr, I think it corageous of you to defend the chars oft bashed and to share your experiences with us. That being said I will systematically respond to various posts down the row (I swear, I let a parental unit have the computer for ONE DAY and look at all this stuff that piles up..))
Jahiera seems to be one of those chars who you either love or you hate. I love her because I relate to her so well, and find it truly difficult to understand people who despise her, because it's like three or four steps away from despising me. One would think that with a Wish spell you could give Aerie her wings back.. of course, that would make all those 'therapy sessions' with her for naught. Viconia has a LOT of pressure on her, especially in the romance. Shar absolutely forbids consorting with clerics of good gods, and only allows it if they (the Sharran cleric) are trying to corrupt them, or if it is business related.. but even then it is frowned upon. The teachings of Shar only reinforce what Viconia has known all her life, that love is soft, that trust is a weakness, and the only one to truly devote yourself to is Shar herself. As the romance progresses Viconia begins to trust you, more and more so, and she even changes alignment. I know the entire "one step away" rule that usually... USUALLY applies to clerics, but in the case of Shar as well as several other gods, the only alignments allowed are CE, LE, and NE. Poor, poor Viconia. The only char trait/quirk that I truly cannot stand is Jan's burping, simply because it's annoying to hear several times a day. Especially when I'm clicking fast, so all I hear is "*BURP* Oh, I can do THAT."

Is that the best you can come up with? ::grin:: Though I admire your trying.

Jan's burping has to do with the fact that he just has a bad wizard class. It's a reaction to gnomes only being illusionists. And his love too.

I don't really think that there is a character that I dislike. When I played the game for the very first time I couldn't stand Aerie, her constant whining just wore on my nerves. But as with all well written characters, with enough time the have a tendency to grow on you.
P.S I recently bought a game called companions of xanath, I never knew there was a series of books (I presume that the game is based on the books, because of the above mention to mundania) |

People they are just CHARACTERS! Their scripts were written long before you even heard of BG2! What do you want, an AI that can make up stuff on the fly? Try to appreciate the literary aspect of what was accomplished here. So far all I've seen are characters that are well thought out and very cleverly versed. Just because a character has a bad trait doesn't make them a "bad character", just the opposite! They each have a unique personality that had to be crafted over weeks and months of work in an intricate web of events, places and other characters. Not only that, but unlike any character from a novel or movie, they had to be written for "most" possible outcomes.
No, these are anything but bad characters. They are about the richest characters I've ever seen in any form of literature, and in spite of the setting they are among the most realistic too. |

Calm down!
I appreciate the value of the chars immensely.. We're just sharing what we think are the negative aspects of a few chars, that's all.. Do you think if Jan didn't burp his char would dramatically change? No. Now, if he stopped talking about turnips, THEN he wouldn't be Jan any more. If Aerie wasn't meek and whiny, she wouldn't be Aerie. But sometimes a few traits here and there are annoying. I don't think anyone called a char bad.. If you scroll up we're discussing bad qualities.

Hehehehehe!
Actaully, it seems that Yoshimo is the most-well loved character in the game.
