Not that I actually recalled those names from memory, though, at least not the second one except for the abbreviated version of the teamname (SOE). I had to double-check on the second name in an old Dutch news article about it.

It's all a hoax, or, a succesful attempt to become a member of the guiness book of records family. Both teams can be named in the book, not for the biggest score ever in a footballmatch, but for the all time lamest attempt to get attention.

Thanks for mentioning that, Lord Starshadow.

I have often wondered just HOW any American football team could score 255 points in one game. I would love to see some footage of that game...but I suppose that was looooooong before "moving films" were invented. You wouldn't happen to have a link to a description of the game would you?

I once heard a comedian talk about this game as part of his stand-up routine....it was really funny. It went something like this.....

Georgia Tech once beat another college football team by a score of 255 to 0.....255 to 0! What happened? Did the other team not show up and Georgia Tech decided to "play out the game anyway"? I mean, HOW does a team score 255 points in a single game???

And what do you tell your team at half-time if you're the coach for the other team???
"Ok guys, we're only down by 120 points. All we have to do is tighten up our defense and we can get right back in this thing."

Meanwhile - over in Ga. Tech's locker room - the coach is looking around the room saying..."Ok, Ok, who HASN'T scored yet? You, the punter, you're gonna run the ball on our opening drive....after that, we're putting the cheerleaders out on the field."

Actually, I believe in 1923, the final score was Georgia Tech 222, Cumberland 0. The Georgia Tech coach was upset when what he regarded as an inferior team went ahead of him in the polls, because of a higher margin of victory. He called up somebody at Cumberland and offered them $250 for their student fund if they would play his team the next Saturday. (They previously had a bye) Poor Cumberland didn't even have a football team, so they got 12 guys to volunteer and trooped off to Atlanta. The final score shows what a colossal mismatch it was. Even today, Cumberland remains perversely proud of the record, and defends it with zeal.
