I see their plan...
"Fellowship: release normal DVD. watch mugs buy.
Fellowship: extended DVD. Mugs buy also.
Fellowship: Boxed DVBD. Mugs who bought both previous DBVDs buy.
Two Towers: Normal DVD. Begin laughing quietly
Two Towers: extended DVD. Begin laughing slightly louder
Two Towers: Box set. Hold your sides and fall off the desk.
Two Towers& Fellowship Box set: snicker in the knowledge one more film is on the way.
Return of the King: Normal DVD. repeat steps for Fellowship and TT.
Return of the King: Extended DVD. Reapeat steps for extended Fellowship and Two towers.
Return of the King: Box set. repeat steps for Fellowship and TT.
All three: Normal DVD "collector's edition". Ponder how else to squeeze money out of mugs.
Trilogy: Extended editions. Panic at little else can be done.
Trilogy: Featuring Documentarys spanning all three films.
5 year aniversary of Fellowship. Embossed box. Charge £70 out of public. (about $150)

I agree with you about the scam. But in all fairness this release was announced before they released the first CDs.
