It's somewhere in between. It's not Deathmatch, and a well-coordinated team is certainly far more effective than a squad of loners, but it's not the super-realistic uber-cool mega-teamplay game that it's lovers hail it as being.

Well, unfortunately I haven't had Internet access at home for about a year . However, CS was one of the most popular games when I did. My roomie and I had to work out a system - you play until you get a kill, then you have to get a kill before you die or you have to give up the seat (only one computer). Of course the game isn't realistic, but from what I've read on the CS forum, they have adressed a lot of the bunny-hopping type problems with the latest patches. I never played in or against a clan, only on pubs, but when people came together and supported each other, the team did a lot better than when they rushed willy-nilly around the map DM-style.

I for one don't like DM games. I went to a LAN party this weekend with 6 other guys and we played Medal of Honor, CS and TFC. [Side note: CS only lasted about 20 min b/c one guy didn't like waiting 1.5 min for the end of the level when he got shot 30 sec in. (this is the guy who owned on TFC and MoH, but could do squat at CS - go figure). ]
Ok, so I don't like DM, but I do like CS and single player FPS's. The reason I don't like death match is there is no goal. I know there is Capture the Flag, and the TFC game where you take over command points (and other games have these too), but what I don't like is just plain vanilla DM. You kill, die, respawn, repeat. There are fun moments to be sure, but I'd rather try to accomplish a goal.

No game is ever going to be realistic (just look at the maps - the most popular ones are completely arbitrary). If it was it wouldn't be fun to play. There has to be a balance between realism and fun, and I think CS does a good job at this. Of course it's frustrating when you get tagged in the head for a one shot kill, but it is exhilirating when the CT's come for the hostages and you pick them off by yourself, one by one.

On a related note, I heard that the US Army was coming out with there own squad based team FPS multiplayer only game. Supposed to be distributed free, with the Federales running the servers. Anyone know anything about this?

all it is is a reason to kill. its nowhere NEAR realistic. if you get hit by an mp5, you WILL go down, but only after 3 to 4 hits, not the 12 to 15 that it takes in the game. if you get hit with a grenade, you die. not so in counter-strike. a good game for realism and team-work is rainbow six and its sequals. besides, all counter-strike is, is a hackfest!!! i havent been into a server that didnt have at least ONE hacker. at least in MY server, i can boot or ban hackers (usually the latter). boy it sure is fun though!!! if any of you play, look for these three names. i use three because i get bored with the same one all the time. [AoD]ScareCrow, BladeSinger, Twizted-Salvation. if you see one of them its me, and RUN!! im coming with a pump or and mp5, or even the almighty AUG!!!

err Bunnyhopping died with CS 1.4 and the weapons are alot more balanced in 1.5

and a Admin can disable headshots to make the game more fun.

I like playing CounterStrike with people I know (best way to avoid the cheaters)... Its alot of fun

Any 'realism' or 'teamwork' spouted by the game's publisher is a marketing ploy to get you to buy the game. Sharpen up folks Sitting in front of a computer screen hammering the keyboard and clicking the mouse button does not and can not make one a special forces hero , so forget about getting a 'realistic' computer game experience because the whole concept is just plain ludicrous.

ps: I don't mean to cause any personal offense by my post and if I did then I apologise.
LOL! So True, so true. I like to use this line when people bitch about realism in games. For CS to be realistic, you'd have to have snipers sitting in one place the whole game, and then relocating after a shot, so therefore you'd have to disable the gun while moving, or disallow moving if you're priming for a shot. You'd have to have people WALKING while shooting, and disable moving while shooting altogether. Plus every other gun would kill you right off the bat so they might as well just make everyone use the same 3 guns. Would anyone actually play CS if this were so? I sincerely doubt it. You have to make games to compensate for the way people play them. Snipers would make easy kills if they couldnt move, the game would degenerate even more into a long-ranged firefight with pistols and machine guns, and a keyboard and mouse is a LOT easier than handling a gun, so therefore you really cant simulate how a person with a gun would behave because well.. you arent holding a gun! You're controlling it with a mouse that reacts with precision and counts for twitch reflexes! Therefore you have to adapt to that, or the game would get unplayable and boring. And it has gotten unplayable and boring. So there..

Well, since I have both taken the standard army training for infantry and also a combat medic training I can tell you that this game as most others are pretty fword far from reality LOL!.

In real life you have to use your legs and have alot more adrenaline pumping when you run around. And you can die from anything. A ricochet just under the rim of your helmet from a lightwieght 5.56 bullet can make Mondays at work heaven

So no. You will never get the realistic feel when sitting in front of a puter. You like to try at least some realism without the possibility of getting killed?
Try paintball, both fun and with the right protection you can get away with a few bruises.

I like the shoot ém games and have ever since I started playing Doom. I just guess that the mindless full aouto has some affection for a tired brain certain days. Right now I don´t have any games that I like too much. I play Max Payne alittle now and then but basicly these games are made for playing with friends as a friendly competition before going out for a a beer or ten.. (or drinks, or coca cola or whatever you fancy).

Counter strike is fun, but it is far from the best game IMHO. I´m really looking forward for Unreal 2003. No realism, just pure old fashion action! hehe.
Oh forgot the sniper question.. No good sniper dismiss the optional open sights when moving from place to place, and if he camps.. Where are my howitzer backup?? hehehe

if it was realistic it would be more fun but more complicated and slow. it would require more strategy then just rushing out into the open and shooting everything that is in front of you. another important thing is cover, not just standing in a shootout and whoever has the best aim and doesnt just hold down fire will usually win. but realistic would be pretty boring, espically if u have to wait for a round to end. if you take 1 hit you are dead that would probably lead to long stand offs and longer matches because people would be hesitant to jump from cover. i enjoy counter-strike, i play it often.

Realistic or not, I think CS is boring. I prefer the psycho wacko DM games where anything goes. Q3A is supreme. I can't wait for UT 2003 though.

If you're looking for a FP based game that's as realistic as possible (for a computer game) try Operation Flashpoint. I can't get any of my DM buddies to play because they don't like dying after getting hit once.

It's got realistic weapons, and a realistic environment. If it's something that might be usefult to you then you can interact with it. For instance... you're low on ammo? Just find a body and grab their weapon. Need to get somewhere fast? Steal a car and drive it.

The world is wide open (somewhat like Morrowind) so you can go anywhere and solve missions in a virtually infinite variety of ways. Throughout the course of the game you go from a grunt taking orders, to a squad leader (with a bunch of guys to worry about), to a sniper, to a tank commander, to a tank squadron commander, to a blackhawk pilot, to an Apache pilot, and you even get a crack at the A10. (you jump into different characters, it's not a single guy getting promoted ) Admittedly the piloting stuff and tank driving is VERY simplified, but the strategy and tactics involved are probably not horribly inaccurate. The squad combat tactics are excellent, by far the best I've seen in a computer game. No it doesn't give you the physical exertion of paintball but it's VERY similar psycologically (and the Adrenaline rush is certianly there when you play against real people), and it's MORE of an intellectual challenge (IMO) simply by virtue of the addition of a BIG PICTURE that you can't simulate on a paintpall field... in many ways it's MORE realistic than paintball.

The attention to detail in the game is very impressive, if you're on a sniper mission don't expect to run accross a field then pull up your rifle and drop a baddie from 500 yards. When you look through the scope it'll be waving all over the place in time with your breathing (which gets harder the farther you run) and you'll have to wait until you catch your breath before you even think about shooting at anything. Once you do shoot, unless you have a silenced gun you might have 10 seconds to get your butt out of there before return fire collects you.

I can't recommend this game highly enough for guys who're getting bored with the simplicity of the run of the mill fps games out there. The "Operation Flashpoint:Resistance" add-on is highly recommended, it fixes a lot of the gripes I had about mediocre graphics quality in the origonal game and will put any high end graphics card on the market to the test.
