Edwin is standing around with 5 mirror images. Then, an enemy mage casts Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wilting and another casts Finger of Death. Now, the Abi Dalzim will have only a 17% chance of hurting him AT ALL. Then, assuming it didn't, there will be only a 20% chance the Finger will affect him either, before MR and saving throws are applied. The Mirror Image spell protection is incredibly useful. The only real drawback is that Magic Missile completely cancels it, because each one of the missiles is calculated separately.

Eh? Detecting secret doors is an innate ability, and Detect Illusions has nothing to do with it. Theives get a 100% chance to detect secret doors while in detect mode, and a base 15% chance of detecting secret doors when not in detect mode.

Elven Thieves get a 20% bonus.
Dwarves Thieves gets a 10% bonus.
Halfling Thieves get a 5% bonus.

Mages get a 5% chance to detect secret doors.
Fighters get a 10% chance to detect secret doors.
Clerics get a 10% chance to detect secret doors.

How else do you think us non-thief soloists detect secret doors? It is all in the manual.

Detect Illusion has nothing to do with detecting secret doors, and it is in my opinion, mediocre. This is because it is not a passive skill, but an active one. A character can cast True Sight and proceed to do other stuff, a character must maintain Detect Illusions or else it is useless.

Hence Edwin must cast Shield beforehand. Shield is a level one spell that nullifies Magic Missile and lasts 5 turns( minutes). Protection from Magical Energy also nullifies Magic Missile( and Skull Trap, and Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting), but it is a level six spell.

I should have elaborated in my previous post. The chance to detect is checked against every round.

It is not uncommon for solo Warriors, Mages and Clerics stand in front of a secret door for several minutes, due to their mediocre detect secret door skills.

Some doors are easier to detect than others. The secret doors to the sewers from the Copper Coronet are always almost detected by anybody. The secret doors in Nalia's Keep are much harder though.
