quote: I think that Zbyszek's post explains my viewpoint a lot better than I did. The main proportion of these guys are not 'religious fanatics' - they're farmers, doctors, dentists, factory workers. And I'm sure many of them are just ordinary peace-loving muslims... not like the mercenaries and terrorists of the other segment. |

An interesting point mentioned in a news special on the Taliban.
25,000 Taliban ruled a country of 25 million. Only about 100,000 Afghans actually shared the Taliban's strict religious beliefs. Those Taliban wearing the distinctive black turban claim to be direct decendants of Mohammad. The religion came about 100 or so years after the death of Mohammad and basically considers sinful most things developed since then. One especially interesting point was that sports events are not considered evil, but you can neither cheer or boo. There are Taliban enforcers walking around the stadium with small whips who hit offenders. These enforcers also walked the streets with their whips where laughing was illegal. What's scary is not that some of the punishment was done for the camera, but that it is the image they want to portray and attacked innocents to show how they enforce their religion.

Ronn,
I saw that report as well. Although I am a fairly stoic person, I cannot even begin to imagine a society where you cannot cheer at a sporting event, where entertainment is sinful, and laughter is outlawed. It almost makes Dante's Inferno sound like a Disney theme park. |

quote: It's my way of encouraging every to "get hammered"...lol. Actually, I'm a Thor (comic book superhero based on the Norse God) fan, and it's looks like his hammer, Mjolnir. Originally when requesting a sig pic I asked for a hammer, but got a battle axe instead. The axe looked so cool that I never asked to have it changed So the hammer before each post is my "tribute" to Thor, the God of Thunder!
