Neither of the two articles linked in the O.P. mentioned the passenger's "socialist" politics that I remember - or if they did, it was done in passing. So the event itself obviously IS newsworthy without the needless addition of the political affiliation.

Poor example, Oblivion. Because the shooter chose his victims at random. The passengers of other cars were not endangered and even the passengers in the car of the shooter could hope that he was going to shoot somebody else instead of them. That is why most of them chose to duck and hide rather than stand and fight. In that case, survival seemed more likely if you stayed hidden than if you made yourself a target.

Flight 93 is an example where ALL the passengers realized they were going to die if they didn't act - and would most likely die even if they did. But they knew they could limit the damage done by turning on their attackers and I'm sure some thought that even a slim chance of survival was better than none. Those that actually carried out the attack accepted the fact that they were probably going to die either way...so they had nothing to lose by their actions.

As the title and the use of words beg to differ as to what he considered to be the most important aspect of this event...

I'll ignore the personal attacks in the replies here, yes most of it was copied and pasted from elsewhere.

The noteworthy event was more that one of the people who fought the attackers was a poltitician, rather than that his political affiliation, such things here in the States make big news.

I think it's a joke based on him being (a) a politician + (b) a socialist. The politicians of some of the socialist countries of Europe would not back the war on Iraq. Now, assume the politician at issue is one of the ones who did not back the war -- or heck, just assume that none backed the war. Tie that to the assumption that the war on Iraq = war on terror. Then, shake, add salt, and you have the result being that a socialist politician of Europe, who did not want to fight the war on terror, ended up being a front-line troop in the war on terror. Garnish with some good old American ignorance regarding European politics, and bingo!!! -- it's a joke fit for Jay Leno.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled wine dumping.

For the record, there isn't a single personal attack in any of the replies. Just because I think the piece you posted is terrible doesn't automatically imply that I extend that criticism to you personally (unless you feel directly offended by johnny's "piece of crap journalist" comment, even though that was directed at the actual author).
