I believe dogs also get hostile if you kill a wolf. Something about them being related...

I killed plenty of wolves in the game, and never had a problem with the dogs. Maybe someone killed a dog accidentally while fighting wolves. Unless the patch changed something I don't know about, fighting wolves should not upset any dogs.

It may involve killing a wolf in sight of a dog. IF you kill them with no dogs around, no harm done. It's not like those cats and their feline telegraph network...

Killing critters has no effect on the quests. However, the type of animal will always attack you, wherever you go. So if you chop up a dog, dogs everywhere will go for you. Same for cats. I don't think rabbits would dare to attack, though, as they aren't predators.

I have killed many rabbits in the game (for the meat; its free as opposed to a healing potion) and so far I haven't encountered any Killer Rabbits... yet

when your level is low killing cats and dogs will give about 50 experience each. then when level is high they'll give no experience.

Cats and dogs are all domesticated animals, and typically don't attack unless you attack them first. Wolves, however, are always hostile and will go for you as soon as they see you. So you don't have much choice there, you do have to kill the wolves.

After I joined the thieves guild, all dogs seemed to go hostile on me. I wonder if it is a bug or something.
