From what I've observed, blocking is automatic. Sometimes the character will raise the shield & block a blow.

also with attacks you with "thrust" if you mve forward or backwards while preparing to swing, "slash" if you strafe left or right while swinging (or building a power attack) and "chop" if you just click, different styles do different damage for different weapons (a few weapons do the same damage to everything).

Pick up a few spells, spark or fireball do area damage and are fairly cheap to cast (and fireball is great for taking out the undead, and can affect through closed doors)
