Personally, I like story telling RPG's, with very loose actual DnDness, though in a dnd setting. My preference.

My preferences? Look at Hazardous Times. That's what I like.

I like the Informal and futuristic kind, though good old D&D is starting to latch itself onto me... I really enjoyed the world of myth, and Halo would've been a MOST kick-ass RPG... too bad it turned out being a First Person shooter instead of a strategy game like originally planned...

My very first PnP campaign is still my favorite. It had a great DM who was also a good friend of mine. He distributed magic items based on quality not quantity. No character had more than 3 or 4 magic items, but they were all good quality items.

The best game I ever ran took years to develop and included a huge mish-mash of elements - INCLUDING some Marvel Super Villains. That was a lot of fun.

I like DnD settings with a good story line and a chance for some serious character development and role-playing. I like the characters to have moderate amounts of magic, but nothing super-powerful. I also like adventures that force the players to utilize ALL of their characters skills and abilities. I once saved the entire party because I decided to play a thief rather than my mid-teen level ranger. The entire party got trapped, but my thief had been scouting ahead. He managed to use his Hide in Shadows until he found and rescued the party. If I had played a fighter, all of us would lost our characters that night.

When it comes to combat, I believe the DM/storyteller SHOULD be rolling dice to determine the outcome. I also believe that ONE person should act as the DM/storyteller.

I'm having a hard time adjusting to the players adding elements or monsters to the story or adding characters as the story goes along.

In my Octagon thread, players are limited to only ONE character and are allowed NO MAGIC. This forces them to develop good strategies in the arena fights. Otherwise, they will just wind up being cannon fodder.

Make the players think, and provide an opportunity for their characters to grow.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

BTW, K.T., what do you think of my new sig?

I like the one's that doesn't follow DnD very strictly, though I like some DnD because it brings more structure I think.
What I miss though is a RP which isn't just about fighting and combat, there are too few of those..

I like the story telling.........
with the free-form fighting. The descriptions are more colorful and interesting..

Personally, I would like to see a low magic-based game, set not exactly in a D&D setting, but would be more similar to Lord of the Rings...in fashion. Usually, on this forum, eveybody wants to be the biggest, strongest wizard or warrior that exists, and I would like to play in a more calmed down setting, where a character like Gandalf has the power to screw up your day pretty severely...but doesn't flaunt it, nor ever really lets you see just how strong he really is. That would make it more fascinating, more mysterious, and more manageable in play.
Just my opinion, of course.
I hope this is the kind of answer you were fishing for.
im just getting around to reading this and yes i agree with this larry you might want to check out the grand heist revisited, its got almost no magic, is losely D&D based, and is set in medeival times, and is actually mostly theives and bounty hunters in the game, its open to all, i hate to advertise this (yeah right), but it seems to be the type of game that you all prefer

I like original things where the future and the past sort of colide in a bizare and twisted form of what is both D&D and Sci-fi...

Like the new movie "Reighn of Fire" or an even better example "Gun Valkyrie" which was set in the year 1862 but had loads of Jet Packs, Space craft, and all centered around a basic concept: The Perpetual motion machine, a twisted dream made reality with consequences that altered the universe greatly and allowed man to do many things...

and stuff like that...

anyway, you get the point...

So, when are we going to see your new Thread, Nanobyte?

You've piqued my interest, so don't keep us in suspense.
