which kinda rp do you all prefer? i've been occupied with some things and haven't been able to work something up as of late. if i had some options to choose from i would display them, but i'm sure there are many. i'd appreciate any input (besides the occasional flamflam :D )

UPDATE please vote in the poll 'poll' version of this conversation at my rp preference poll.

What do you mean, like strictly roleplaying, d&d type hack and shash, sci-fi, horror, etc? I like a decent mix, good character interaction with some action, not necessarily combat, but it can be, and anything that helps a story and makes it entertaining, even if your character has to die for it to happen.

It's ok here or there,Tao.

The topic is pertinent to this forum so let's talk about it here.

Personally I like D&D or Sci Fic worlds to rp in.

I agree that this is an okay topic, since I beleive that Nanobyte is wanting to get ideas for a game to start here...am I right?

Personally, I would like to see a low magic-based game, set not exactly in a D&D setting, but would be more similar to Lord of the Rings...in fashion. Usually, on this forum, eveybody wants to be the biggest, strongest wizard or warrior that exists, and I would like to play in a more calmed down setting, where a character like Gandalf has the power to screw up your day pretty severely...but doesn't flaunt it, nor ever really lets you see just how strong he really is. That would make it more fascinating, more mysterious, and more manageable in play.
Just my opinion, of course.
I hope this is the kind of answer you were fishing for.

Exactly! I would like to see more of this on this forum!

yea, that is what i'm trying to do. i know it's obvious that when i start stories, they are different, but i never seem to attract enough attention. maybe it's because everyone is occupied with other things going on in their lives (or the forums), but it really blows the big one when i sit down for a couple hours to think up a good story and no one participates. i do all things a good dm should, leave options open, allow players to express themselves through their characters, allow the environment and the people to be effected by their actions. i enjoy having a character as well, but i try to make them different, for example, one i had been previously working up:

aquatic elf
sorcerer
chaotic neutral

spells: (15 from the 3rd ed. pnp and 1 of my own)
alter self
cone of cold
control water
control winds
create water
fire shield (cold)
geas
otiluke's freezing sphere
protection from elements (electric)
ray of frost
shapechange
sleet storm
summon nature's ally (water-based creatures)
wall of ice
water breathing
.:-summon water golem for use of protection (preserve himself while on land)-:.

now i know i was a little heavy on the spells, but i tried to limit them to reasonable ones, as in low lvl and mostly water-based.. the reason why i never brought this character into a story was because i lost interest. i'm hoping i will be enlightened on why i came here those few months ago, because i really enjoy participating. and thanx for all the input.

I too prefer a loose DnD-like setting, like a dark age fantasy world with DnD aspects, but also with plenty of room for other, more original creatures, magic etc.. In the same context, I prefer games where there aren't rules lurking around every corner and dice rolled for your every action. A world with the freedom to create and be original.
As far as characters are concerned, Larry pretty much said it all. Of course, if my character has little reason to stick with the group he'll go off on his own.
In much the same way I have no problems with killing off my own characters, except that there has to be a good reason for it.
Well, not always. I created a thief named Skip once (who tended to wet his pants at every oppertunity) and I had some great plans concerning his demise (you could even say he was created to die). Unfortunately for me, fortunately for Skip, others kept stepping in to rescue him...

Most genres are fine with me, but I especially love super-hero RPGs. ;) Also I'd love D&D-type RPGs featuring at least some Oriental content.

Do prefer storytelling to just plain dice-rolling combat, though. And I certainly can't stand uber characters either.

that's another thing i aim at doing when i create stories. heck, i made one before where there was only one rule, and that was to be realistic. this is confusing, it seems everyone wants something different from the average, yet i thrive to make those type rp's and no one joins.. maybe my stories are not too in-depth. of course, sometimes i make chars that make myself look like i don't want anyone to join, but it's only the char. i don't know, it's too confusing
