A friend of mine said he got one of those pocket dragon things (or was it a faerie dragon). Also, in the game you find a mage with a spellcasting imp for a familiar. Any idea how to get these?

Check the description for the familiar spell (read the scroll). It says what familiars go to what class and the familiars abilities.

You only get the fairy dragon if your protagonist spell caster is chaotic good.
