You will reach one of the areas later, from the mine tunnels (or use one of several tricks to get past them). The other area contains a nice psionic rod, and i think it is intended that you can't get it without making the trang hostile (but there too is a trick). I'd recommend to play 'normal' in the first game, and don't use the tricks.

If you don't have a Bard the instruments can fetch a good price.

Alas, I do have a bard, might sell of the ones I'm not using, those drums that cast slow etc.
