I found that when I used a Death Bomb against Don Barlone and the other rat, when they died I was still considered to be friendly among "Rattkin Razuka" or whatever.

well it very may well be a bug, but who's to say it is? The manual does't say anything about how to turn green dots red. If you kill someone from behind in one strike, nobody's around to see it or tell anybody, shouldn't everyone still be green instead of red? Maybe that's a bug and instant death spells work correctly. After all, how's Barlone supposed to know I waylaid Rattus out in the middle of nowhere?
On the other hand, it is a very good tip if you have a slow computer and want to get rid of some of the processing involved or you're tired of getting pushed out of the way by NPCs. It's not like you Identify 9, and suddenly your bishop has max levels. I'm not sure what exactly the payoff is if it's an exploit. The only benefits are your faction rating and sometimes a good trinket. |

Since you don't get the kill credited (on your list of the number of kills), it's likely a bug exploit. But then again, it's not that anyone would wag a finger and say no-no. I've played muds for a quite a while, and i'm wary of using exploits (usually a reason for a character deletion on a mud), but i play around with doom on the t'rangaporter shortcut road nonetheless. After all, it's supposed to be fun (isn't it), so anyone can put the restrictions on themselves they like to.

Awesome! I had no idea a computer gaming ethics thread would result, but I like it.
For my part, I feel that the question of whether it is a bug or not is irrelevant. To me, the ethical question is one of playability. Does it ruin the game that there is a way to kill green characters without suffering from lower faction ratings? In Wizardry 8, I think it does not. I can't think of any major gameplay advantage you can gain by this subterfuge. Further, I think it would be unfair for this type of thing to be impossible. The designers seem to agree: There are a few green NPCs that you are allowed *by design* to kill with no consequences, e.g., the Rapax Constable. So I conclude that it's open season on annoying NPCs. Besides, it isn't without risks. None of the murder methods being employed are foolproof, and the individual victims fight back. |
