yeah, generally speaking, the dread spear is the best choice for a polearm, overall (unless you can get the faust halberd and some hp regen going!
 )imo, polearm weapons are too few and max out too quickly in the game. by the time you leave trynton you've got the second best available. of course, that's one less thing to worry about, and perhaps another reason polearms are such a good choice for one (or more) of your meleers, but still... apologies for whinging
