Well, I re-installed the demo again since I lost the intitial saved game that it came with and replayed up to the Swallower this afternoon.
I don't know what the heck I did so right the last time, but this time the thing swallowed my fighter AND my priest and proceeded to flat-out kill everyone else! It was awesome! Now, to go figure out what it was I did right so I can get past it this time and try to get the key to the safe!

Aye, on my first meeting with him (the big, bad, ultra-nasty Swallower) both my fighter and my monk were sorrowfully swallowed & I promptly lost the fight (actually, knocked him down to 20 hp before all of my magic spells & items ran out).

However, on the second pass through, he only swallowed my monk, and my fighter made up for the previous disaster...pounded the $&!# out of him!

Now it's time to go back through, this time changing classes & experimenting to create power-house party!

well, i had a horrible experience my first outing with "Safflower"...

each time he lunged at the party, he took out a person. iona was one of the last, and at one point, she yelled that "You can't trust anyone anymore. Imagine that.... sneaking away in the middle of a battle. Hmmpph! no sense of honor."

he swallowed her right after that. the last one to go was Flicker. poor little thing. she kept jabbing him with her little Faerie Stick. LOL. as if!

that's the only time i saw the Grim Reaper cutaway in the demo. pooh! i can't remember how powerful he was, but it was during my "expert" experiment. even on "normal" i lost 3 of my team.

but i re-loaded on "normal" to get a strong "Safflower" with the highest number of HPs, so i had it coming. ::smiles::

V***V

One of the ways I beat "Saffy" was to use the spell "Guardian Angel" on the fighter and have him target the beast. Most of Saffy's attacks were ranged at him, and the Guardian Angel took all the blows. The others who got "nipped" were quickly healed by the priest. Also, the Monk scored a crit against him and K.O'd him for three rounds, which helped a LOT...that was just a stroke of luck.

But do use Guardian Angel...it's a great spell (a lot better than the "Vine of Life" one in W&W.)

Cheers,

In my second playthrough, I really had a tough time with 'Ol Saffy! (Saffy ROFL!)
It took many tries and finally having the characters he seemed to favor targeting use Potions of Razor Cloak.
Nice potions! Every time he took a bite of them, he got damage from the "Razor Skin" the potions gave them.
