My suggestion is Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion/Elric series...
The first book is a bit slow to start off but once it's started its a jet powered rollercoaster[/QUOTE]I always liked the first book the best. Gave me an interesting insight in Drow culture.

The Drizzt's books are very good until you move on to more "refined" books, like the "A song of Ice and Fire" series from Goerge R.R. Martin, the "Wayfarer: Redemption" series from Sara Douglass and the "Wheel of Time" series From Robert Jordan.

After reading books from some of these authors and other like those and Terry Goodkind, you will find TSR novels to be nothing more than very predictable children's books. Everything is just always going well, nothing really bad happen to the main characters, they are CHEESY. You know that anything can happen, but the ending will be good, everyone will be happy and there will be no long lasting effects.

I believe it is a lot better to read novels in wich ANYTHING can happen. You never know if this character is going to be alive in the next chapter. When he encounter that big bad monster, you can't stop asking yourself "Will this character survive? Or will he end up dead like his father and sister in the last chapter?".

I somehow agree with you Luvian. I`ve never taken the Forgotten Realms novels(the ones I`ve read so far)to be "refined" as you choose to say it, but I think it`s great reading and good entertainment. I also think that the books are a litte predictable but I really don`t care as I like them anyway=)Soon I`m starting on George Martins books which I`ve heard very much of.

One more thing I forgot, The Dark Elf Trilogy is "refined" in my eyes.

By first book do you mean Homeland or the Darkelf trilogy in general.

I loved the DE trilogy and it is the best book I have ever read as I stated above, but I still think that compared to the later parts of the book homeland is a little slow to start

I may be a bit late, but have you considered Philip Pullman? For more information go here
