I gotta go with George R.R. Martin. I've read *a lot* of fantasy fiction and his writing style and storylines are like a breath of fresh air.

I reckon Robin Hobbs book's are excellent, and terry pratchett is good although some of the humour in his later books is a little strained.

It's a close one but in the end (surprise) John Ronald Ruel Tolkien, closely followed by C.S.Lewis, Stephen Lawhead, Peter Moorwood and David Gemmel for fantasy. Robert.E.Howard for a different style of fantasy writing (along with Fritz Lieber). Dashiel Hammet, Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for detective work. Oh, and for the good old historical stuff, Francis Bacon (aka William Shakespeare), Homer, Geoffrey Chaucer, Geoffrey of Monmouth, Snori Sturllusson and the many authors of the Anglo Saxon annals. There, that's about it.

JRR Tolkein, most assuredly. Many authors have made me think, laugh, cry and escape reality....he made me feel like a part of Middle Earth....and like going back again and again.
Guess I'd want to give special mention to others, including, Isaac Asimov ( a trailblazer!), William Shakespeare (still read his works), Charles Dickens (Great Expectations made quite an impression!). I'm sure there are more, but I'll end here for now! Caleb- Michael Crighton is great! The Andromeda Strain is one of my favs and I consider it a classic! Tolkien and Feist. I think of Tolkien like the wright bros. He made the first airplane but not necessarily the best. I think some modern authors have carried the torch further, but they wouldn't be here were it not for Tolkiens genius lighting the torch.

I would say tolkien is really good, but definetly pratchett and moorcock are the best writers (they give you something to thing about)
