Umm.....As with all NPCs who state a 'condition' for joining the group, is you don't fulfill Coran's quest (kill a wyvern and take its head to the mayor of Beregost) within a certain amount of time, he'll leave and find someone else who isn't such a slacker. That's why you should always listen to your party members. What we're talking about is Coran talking about ditching the group AFTER his quest has been finished.
