"Death Spells" and "Spells which cause death" are 2 different things: Finger of Death, Wail of the Banshee, Death Spell, and Demilich Howl are all Necromancy spells, they check your Save vs. Death, and most importantly, they can be blocked by the spell Death Ward.
Flesh to Stone, Disintegrate, and Imprisonment are Alteration spells, check your Save vs. Spells (if applicable), and don't give a rat's ass about whether or not you're Death Warded.

As for the ability, yeah, I think the only times I use it are in the Eastern Tunnels and Round 2 of Improved Irenicus. That's about all the use it has, really.

Probably the people who're out there beating themselves to death with the Ugly Stick.

Meaning, few people use that specific ability, but few people use the Ugly Stick and beat themselves ugly, either. But, for the purposes of this thread, it bears mentioning.

Is there an item called the "Ugly Stick"?

The first post references it. It's a colloquialism for the "Rod of Terror" because you can use it to beat yourself ugly to the point of death.

Ahh, but there's the cheese of using a certain ring there! I guess you become so frikkin' ugly, you become very cute! Kinda like a pug or cabbage patch kid.

Those are not cute, but are relevant to the discussion in that beating a Cabbage Patch Kid will make its appearance more tolerable to me.
