You all have a good point.
But if you find yourself in a hard battle then you just reload and memorize the needed spells. This isn't real life either. |

quote: i'm not talking about comedy. the game is already extremely funny (at times). i am saying that the game could be more oriented towards the wizard, or atleast on an equal playing field with the fighters and rangers (who dominate the game). so then the question would have to be, how do you achieve this? well, i mentioned earlier that maybe they could have designed magic use around a point system and not memorization. i don't know? maybe this idea is "taboo" to the AD&D rulers and regulators. or maybe they could allocate more magic slots and at the same time make the monsters one or two notches more difficult? look, the last thing i would want to do is make the game easier, i just think it could be more balanced. or like "we just stop to play the game cause it doesn't resemble real life with all the saving and loading and bigass dragons let alone the "the city where magic is forbidden"(Bg2).. or something like that"
Like every computer game, the whole idea is an mix of reality and gameplay. I think the ratio in Baldurs gate is pretty damn good for this kinda game.

I personally like how mages are represented in the BG series. Mages are still a very powerful class, but unlike in many other games, here they actually have some weaknesses
![]() As for magic point systems, I am really not a big fan of them at all. They are made for powergamers. In theory they aren't so horrible, but in practice I've found that you never really run out of magic points, which means you basically have unlimited spells and you can use whatever spells you want. Take Final Fantasy 10 for example. They have a magic point system. More powerful spells use up more magic points. However, half way through the game you obtain an item that makes all spells use only 1 magic point! Diablo 2 is similar. Blizzard thought that by taking mana potions out of the stores, they would limit the amount of spells (skills whatever) that the characters could use. Wrong. My D2 characters never ran out of mana because mana potions were so abundantly dropped by the monsters. Result, they could use their most powerful spells/skills all the damn time. The memorization system lends to more strategy IMO. Not only are you limited in how many spells you can cast, but you also have to plan ahead and think about which spells you are likely to use. If you have to reload after each battle and memorize different spells, you probably shouldn't be playing a mage. If you want an effective mage you should memorize a variety of spells that will suite most situations, instead of for example memorizing all of one spell and then bitching about it later. That's like going camping and bringing all firewood but no matches.

Just thought of something. In BG2, there is an new class called the Sorcerer and this may be closer to what you were wanting out of a mage. It's basically a mage that can cast any of his spells without having to pick certain ones to memorize in advance. He can cast up to 6 spells of each level per day, and they can be all of the same spell or a combination of different spells of that level. That's like having your entire spell book memorized 6 times over and being able to cast any 6 spells from each level. That makes the Sorcerer very versitle because he can for example either cast 6 Fireballs, or 3 Fireballs and some protective spells or whatever else, depending on what's needed for the situation.
The problem is that the Sorcerer can only know up to 5 spells on each level, which obviously makes the Sorcerer not quite so versitle They are really powerful though when accompanied by a secondary mage for backup spells.

Well said, Darkman, on the "magic point system"
I completely agree [ 02-19-2002: Message edited by: Vohl ] |

Acctually, I also find this a bit anoying. It isn't very realistic or role playing to reload and sleep some times before entering a room, because the character doesn't know anything about the creatures inside. Only the player behind the keybord does.
Sourcerer is therefore very good. Shame they aren't in BG1 ![]() |

well if you ask me this (sorcerer) class might be what i'm looking for. i guess i'll have to go buy BG2. but i wonder how hard it would be for interplay to develope a patch that would intergrate this sorcerer class into BG1 and maybe make other drastic changes through patches and so on. i mean if you are not happy with that particular version (via patch) then just reinstall the game.
although BG1 is awesome, you have to admit that there are a ways to make it eevveenn better! but then again maybe i'm being unrealistic, what do i know? |

I'm a big fan o mages and they are me fav character and i saw being one of them in BG 1 as a challenge as u start out so weak and vulnerable but as the game progresses you accumulate more and more power. I thought that Black Isle presented the mage really well in BG 1 as the player needs dedication and lots of skill to master this difficult art. I agree that saving and reloading games repeatedly is not in the spirit of the game, but is there anyway of preventing this happening ingame? Restricing the save options inside the game in my opinion would adversly affect the gameplay.
