Also, did you kill Gorach at the front desk in the ground level of Mae'Var's guild? He's the chubby merchant. He counts as an innocent bystander so killing him, even if he goes hostile, lowers rep.

The best way to avoid this is by entering the basement through the back door, at the southastern dock in the docks district.

What? If you kill him after he goes hostile, then you don't lose any rep points.

No mods, it happens in the default game.

You kill him and your reputation decreases.

Really?! I've wasted him in every one of my games, and never lost any reputation. However, in each case I had been sent by Renal to kill Mae'var, and only attacked him when he turned hostile and the thieves appeared to attack.

I concur with the "Gorch-ain't-innocent" side. I've never lost Rep or Virtue from whacking him, at any time. Stealing from him, yes, killing him, no.

You don't lose any Rep points for whacking Gorch, if you have permission from Renal, and Gorch goes hostile first.

I have, and that's when he's attacked me first aka gone hostile.

Besides, from my perspective I view the NPC's upstairs as being at least a bit more innocent than Mae'Var, so just take the back way instead.
