As long as your characters strong enough, I'd recommend using unenchanted full plate. You can then wear a ring of protection, and you'll have a lower AC. Don't forget that ankheg armour is only classed as plate mail which provides -3 versus slashing weapons. Full plate boasts -4 slashing, -3 missile and -3 piercing so you will get a lower AC and superiour protection over the ankheg armour.

I personally prefer the Full Platemail over other types in BG1. Good protection, not magic so can be used with other items. Doesn't look too shabby either.
BG2 spoiler: . . . . . . . . . . . . What beats me is that the dang ankheg armor is magic, while, say, Red Dragon Scale plate is not magic. Now tell me, which creature is more "magical" - ankheg or a dragon? So to me it seems as a bug, and the ankheg platemail should not be magical. Just that it isn't "fixed" over such a long file, that I doubt it ever will heh.. At least not by Bioware.

I got my ankheg armour from the ground in nashkel. Its a real shame that you can't use it in conjunction with other magical items (eg ring of protection +1).

The ankheg armor hidden on the Nashkel map is tough to find. Look for it just south of a small christmas tree on the western edge of the norhtern most plowed fields.

In fact, here are to co-ordinates to find the ankheg armor in Nashkel - X=187, Y=2747 I can't remember how you get them up on the screen, something like tab. Help anyone?

The x, y coordinates are displayed by pressing the L key. Wherever your cursor is, the coordinates will be displayed when you press it. IIRC, the upper lefthand corner are the zero x and y coordinates. So as you move to the right and down the numbers increase (hope that's right as I'm too lazy to check right now

The Red Dragon Scale is magical in BG2 - at least after they fixed that bug
just to re-iterate the ankheg armour procedure... kill ten (or more, depends howmuch you can carry...) andkhegs (the quota is not actually implemeted) Cart them to the smithy (there is someone else who will buy them , IIRC, but he will not make armour for you) in beregost. dump all but one. enter the building, flog one head for 500gp exit, pickup a head, repeat. go kill some more, repeat until you are rich. take your last head an do _not_ sell it to him. he will argue a bit IIRC, eventualy he will offer to make a suit for 4000gp. come back in a tenday )i.e come back after at least ten days. Come back and grab your suit of ankheg plate. shame its not very good, but at least the green colour is nice. dont bother getting more heads- thunderhammer will no longer accept them. if Gatekeeper can access the global variables (ShadowKeeper can. but not for BG1) look for a related variable name and you might be able to accelerate this, or even make multiple suits).

In order to make the Ankheg Plate Armor not count as magical do the following:
Find the file ITEMEXCL.2DA Open it with a TEXT EDITOR Find the line with "PLAT06 1" Get rid of that line Save as a text file Place fine on override directory Now you can wear rings and such with your Ankheg Plate armor I assume you know how to extract data files, because you used the item editor. It should be in the same .bif file. |

I kinda agree that the Ankheg plate shouldn't be magical--nowhere did Thunderhammer say he was going to have some passing Mage put a permanent Shield spell on it. What you COULD do in BG1 is this:
My Druid is wearing the Ankheg and so can't wear an Amulet of Protection, but I can use Gatekeeper to adjust his natural AC and Saving Throws to where they would be if he WAS using an Amulet, and then (to be fair) never use his Necklace slot for anything. I'm going to do something similar with the Plate+3. One of my guys is gonna have to choose between unenchanted Full Plate and the Plate+3....the Full Plate is better, of course, but I like the color of the +3. I can't use Gatekeeper to turn the Full Plate gold, so I'll make the +3 have the same stats as Full Plate and a Ring of Protection. It's fair as long as I don't use the legit Full Plate.

I don't use the ankheg armour because I don't like the color. I use Gatekeeper to change the appearance of my characters. I saw that in BG2, there is an add-on script that allows you to change the colors of the mage robes and such. I wish that existed for BG1. My character didn't use the robe of the neutral archmagi for some time after I got it just because I couldn't stand the colors... One good thing, though- they do make it so your shoes go with your outfit when you put on something new.
