I like sorcerers. Hey wait, I think this is like the 10,000,000th time this topic has surfaced in the few years I've been a member here.

Sorcerers for advanced players but Necromancers for the newbies.

Ever since 3rd edition came out, I have never used a regular mage. Mostly because I'm lazy and don't want to have to look for scrolls.
This is especially true in CRPGS. If you play as a mage, you often have to be a long time before getting the spells you want. Mages do have an advantage, it's metamagic feats. [ 08-26-2003, 09:29 PM: Message edited by: Luvian ]

In pen and paper, definitely the wizard. There are a huge number of spells in PnP to find, and thereby a sorcerer is much more limited.
In the BG series, definitely the sorcerer. The game has nowhere near the number of spells you see in PnP, so the sorcerers limitation is not much of a limitation at all. If you go through the manual, you will see only a few spells of each level that you will use regularly, so if you choose those as your spells you are all set. Plus, a sorcerer can cast spells off of scrolls just like a wizard, so just hold onto a few spell scrolls for those not-so-commonly-used spells. Only real disadvantage over the wizard is no extra xp from scribing scrolls.

![]() I havn't tried a sorc yet, but it's on my to-do list . I agree about how a mage doesn't use most of his/her spells that they memorize. And I also end up putting magic missile for every spell slot for lvl 1 (if I put another, it would be chromatic orb probabl). I rarely put something besides all magic missiles for lvl 1 spells that are memorized. So I'd go with sorceror, sounds better than a mage.

I prefer the mage, mainly because its more versatile...... But I agree that the Sorc is useful when u want to cast multiple spells at once..

Let's bring an age-old debate back.
Mages end up using less than 1/3 of the spells they scribe. Even with this, they usually tend to fill all the slots in a certain level with a certain spell (Magic Missle, for example. ADHW is common, as well). A Sorcerer learns less spells, total, but can use any spell memorized more times than the mage, and the spell doesn't have to be selected before-hand, the Sorcerer doesn't need to rest, etc. Both can cast spells from scrolls, so in the rare situation that the Sorcerer would not have the right spell for the situation, which is usually a very uncommon one, the spell can be cast from a scroll. The beauty of a Sorcerer (IMO) lies in their spell-casting system. They memorize a certain amount of spells at level-up, and have them ready to cast. You use the spell for the situation, but you don't have to. You can cast Identify 6 times (Ex.), Magic Missle 6 times, etc., without having to put them in your spell slots and resting. The saving grace of Mages is their versatility. They can take part in dual/multi classes, which, when done correctly, are extremely powerful, and entertaining as well. They also gain experience from scrolls, and considering how many scrolls there are that can be scribed, the total exp gained is considerable. To rebute the "Both can cast spells from scrolls..." in the Sorc section, sometimes you need to cast a spell more than once. With the Mage, you gain as many uses from your scroll per day as you have slots open in it's level. I may have repeated something, but I wasn't paying much attention to this. ADD] Dundee can explain why the Sorcerer is superior much better than I could. [ 08-28-2003, 08:55 AM: Message edited by: Pyrenk ]
