the one that bugs me is when jaheira starts going on about khalid at the start of BG2. Which is odd because apart from a few diseased gibberlings and some hobgoblins, khalid is usually the first casualty whenever I play BG1 (yes, that's right, as soon as I meet him I send him off to fight ankhegs bare-handed)

ps. took me ages to work out who neb was when i met him in BG2

Actually, a good idea for a mod would be to have the characters you had from the first game be right there when you start. I think it sucks that you get stuck with the generic "this is what we expected you to finish BG1 with" party. I couldn't stand Jaheira and Khalid; I added them long enough to give her the belt of gender change then kicked them out of my party to figure things out. Imoen stayed a thief in my game, so she should start out that way in this game (that way I can get her skills to a solid level then dual her over, if at all). I had Ajantis in my game, so he should be in one of the cages when I start. I also had Branwen, so she should be right there, too. I realize there is a mod (Darkest Day) that has many of the characters in them, but they should pop up in the dungeon if I finish BG1 with them. When you hit the spots where they show up in BG2, then you could just have another, generic NPC there instead. Does it matter if it is Xzar asking you to get Montaron, or another mage asking you to recover his friend from the Harper Hold? Does Coran have to ask you to rescue Safana, or can it just be a never-before-seen NPC asking you to rescue his loved one? Sure, it would take a little programming to change the character encountered based upon who you started the game with, but it would still be a nice plus.

BTW, I also hate starting a new character and getting stuck at 89,000 xp. I didn't do that tower of death in ToSC for nothing.

**contains minor plot spoilers**

Nerull, the reason Imoen is dual classed at the beginning, is so you will take Yoshimo with you. If Imoen was a regular thief, then why would you pick up Yoshy? Some first time players would say "Hey, i dont need this guy, i have Imoen, she is a pure thief like him, but she has more EXP. Go away Yoshimo!". Its the same reason Yoshimo is the only pure class thief in the game... So you will take him along for plot reasons.

Good point, but hey, if you could mod the game to somehow pick up your party imported from BG1, it would be nice. At least you would truly feel like you are continuing your game, instead of starting a whole new game.

In fact, a cool mod for BG1 would be to allow the races/classes/kits from BG2 (I don't know if anyone ever did that). It would be cool to be able to start out as a sorcerer, barbarian (how can you be a barbarian if you grew up in Candlekeep?), or one of the kits (the shapechanging abilities of the Avenger or Shapeshifter, though not achieved until a little later in BG1, would be nice in those games). Then you could truly take one character all the way through the entire game without ever having to "upgrade" your character when you hit BG2.

Anyway, when I moved from BG1 to BG2 with my conjurer, he had the claw on him but it did not make the trip (it still had the Helm of Balduran in the case, not the claw). Which is fine; though there are some nice helms in BG2, I still think the Helm of Balduran can be on one of your party members throughout the game. I mean, what other helm pretty much boost everything (except elemental damage, but hey, you can't be perfect...without cheating).

Done. Let's see what I get. Don't think too many people worry about the first game anymore, though.

It's not the same thing, but Weimer and co are writing BG2 as a MOD for Icewind Dale 2. The possibility exists for BG1 to get the same treatment, making for a true ubermod. This wouldn't give you access to kits, but ID2 uses the 3rd edition class system... so there wouldn't be any kits!

Cool. I actually like the 3rd edition a bit better, though I have not played IWD2 yet. Does IWD2 have prestige classes? If so, then they effectively have kits (though you have to qualify for them). I purposely did not pick up IWD2 (or IWD for that matter) because of the lack of interaction. When you create the entire party, I think you lose a lot. The game becomes more hack-and-slash and less interaction oriented (not that BG2 is not primarily hack-and-slash). If I want a kill-fest, I play Diablo. But I get bored of that, so end up back playing BG2.

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up. It might be worth investing in IWD2 now, especially if they add the NPCs from BG2 ("Go for the eyes, Boo...").

um... in my game - and Ive heard the same from other people so I think its pretty much standard - when I imported from BG1 to BG2 I had 161,000 exp, and Imoen, Jaheira and Minsc (cant remember about joshi) also got bumped up to match when they joined up with me.

the way I think it works is this.
if you had up to 89,000 - you get 89,000 in BG2
between 89,000 and 161,000 - you got the exact amount
161,000 or more (via XP cap remover etc) you got exactly 161,000 in BG2

so you dont do durlag's tower for nothing. mages and bards DO however, lose their spell book, but on the plus side, everyone gets to reconfigure their weapon/thieving skills.
Actually, I just repatched my game, and I started a new character, and started out with 161,000 xp. Guess I had an older patch...

Anyway, here's the response I got from the BG1 boards about a mod for BG1:

Its possible and in progress, but not in the way you mean.

There is no way to put the BG2 kits into BG1. BG1 has no kit support code, I doubt it has all the effects needed, and so on.

What is possible is to move the BG1 content into BG2, which allows you to play BG1 in high res, with tab highlighting, in one complete continuous adventure all the way to the ToB final battle.

So be on the lookout!
