Were you planning to use items to boost stats?
Like giving a girdle of (whatever type) giant strength to boost the CON high person.

I'm a little ambivalent on that one.

Butterfingers? Did you use any stat-to-18+ items on Zach?

Yes. As mentioned above, the Girdle of Fortitude. For those moments when, as Keldorn would say, "Boy, you must make your self useful. Prepare to become the Decoy!"

His items. If I can remember them all.

Pearly White Ioun Stone.
Ring of Regeneration.
Ring of Air Control. (For invisibility)
Amulet of Poison Protection.
Girdle of Fortitude.
Shadow Dragon Armor.
Guantlets keep switching. Some times I use the ones with +1 THAC0.

Various daggers, the shortsword that casts mirror image, elemental staves of mastery, staff of rhynn, mostly he uses Firetooth now. Although Pixie Prick is still a main selection. He keeps a nasty +4 shortsword strapped down on his thigh should he ever need it. Also, there is a wicked +4 dagger he keeps up his sleeve. If I pick up anything, even a few extra potions, he becomes encumbered and can't move

Edit. Forgot to mention. Zach is the biggest chicken of all time. Part of his roleplaying bit is to use any item that might extend, save, or otherwise keep him alive at all costs. The Girdle of Fortitude fits this role nicely, but, I don't know if you would want to use stat boosting items or not.

Well, the girdle of Fortitude doesn't function continiously, so I guess its totally OK, but I can't decide whether the gauntlets of dexterity as well as the gauntlets and belts of strength would ruin the concept.

With the Gauntlets of Dexterity on the STR 18 fighter and the Gauntlets of Ogre Power on the CON 18 fighter they would become pretty normal. A belt on the thief and the original concept would be close to disintegration.

Should I be nerfing them even more to begin with?

If your aim is to directly cripple your party, rather than creating new obstacles and try to circumvent them, then why not use characters which are completely unfit for the set of stats they have? Make the ones with 18 WIS, INT and CHA Fighters, while the ones with maxed STR and DEX will be spellcasters of some sort, and finally a Thief with 18 CON.

Well, you could go a stretch further. Instead of my average Bhaalspawn idea, you could do the average party. Why bother with 18s at all? Allow Paladins and Rangers, but, push them down for the lowest stats, or, even a Bard, well I should say, a Bard class min reqs are quite close to average. Keep everybody's stats around 8 to say maybe, 12 or so at the highest. Then keep items for those that need them. Give your fighter the Gauntlets of Ogre Power. Give your thief or missle user the Guantlets of Dexterity. Distribute the much needed stat boosting items to those that would need them most. If you have a different race, like say a Halfling, allow a slightly higher score for them. Instead of 10 to 12 dex, maybe allow a 13 or even a 14. But nothing extraordinary. Doing this of course, would bring you back to a near PnP experience, forcing everybody in the party to do their utmost for survival. Mages would have limited spells and poor casting abilities. Clerics would be much the same. There would be some traps your thief would have a very hard time with. Of course, if you did go with this sort of party idea, a Ranger or a Paladin really would be a good idea, from a role playing view, a man who rises (Only slightly above the rest) to lead them on to glorious victory. Let's face it, the average common shmoe needs a good leader to get them to do anything.

Instead of the "one-stat-at-18-and-the-others-at-9," I would just make a party that didn't really make sense, such as:
Elven Barbarian
Human Bard
Dwarven Thief
Gnomish Cleric
Half-Elven Mage
Halfling Kensai
(Or, if you don't mind cheating, a Half-Orc Bard and a Halfling Sorcerer.)

Then roll stats for each one. The first set of stats, no matter what it is, is what they get.

Here is my suggestion for a weird party

Gnome Barbarian using a halberd
A dwarven kensai duel wielding a long sword and club
A halfling cleric(i apoligize if thats not possible, dont have the energy to check now. im hitting the sack after this post.)
A half-orc assassin with the 18 cha
An Elven diviner
I dont know, a Human jester or something

Exept that the charisma max is 17 for half-orcs it's all rather sensible.

I would push your idea ever farter. I has already been proven that average stats characters can do very well, so giving them a 18 stat make it even easier.

Instead, here is what I suggest. DoO like you intended, givine each character a stat of 18, but put all other stats at 3.

Now, you will have to rely on each char's goos stat. That would be interesting to try.
