I started smoking, off and on, when I was 17, and it progressed to an everyday habit by the time I was 20. I'm 35 now and know every cigarette takes time off my life. They say the addiction to nicotine is harder to kick than heroin.

Smoking is the one bad habit I never had. I had a cigarette at the age of 5, somebody told my Mum and she beat the shit out of me. I guess that put me off for life. Years later I caught my sister smoking and grassed her up - so she took the beating. She doesn't smoke anymore.

More and more young people in Britain are smoking these days. I can't understand why. Just peer pressure I guess.

I have my own habit that I can't kick.

Thanks Donut i'll make an apointmment with my GP right away.
So this is it, my first day trying to quit...

You may have some difficulty in getting your GP to prescribe them, they are pretty expensive (up to £100 for an 8 week course). He/She might want you to show your commitment by giving up on your own first. We ask for a two week period before we prescribe.

Also we insist on attendence at smoking cessation counselling for about 6 weeks. Evidence shows that patches+counselling has a much higher success rate. The Practice Nurse may give counselling.

The GP will weigh up the risk of using nicotine patches against the health risks of you continuing to smoke. You may sway him by mentioning that it will be much harder for you to quit in 5 years than it is going to be today.

Good luck.

Yeah i've noticed that peole who smoke are getting younger and younger. One of the reasons that i decided to quit is when i was smoking at a bus stop a little boy who must have been about 10 years old asked me for a ciggy. Obviously i said "No way! You're way to young".
I guess it was peer presure that got me started, well it was me telling my girl friend that i don't like kissing someone with ash on thier breath. So she started me off, she was right i didnt taste the ash on her breath after that. But thats not a good reason to start, i know now that i should have told her that she should give up.
Donut: i've tried to give up before but the withdrawl was too bad. Do you think that if i told my docter that it would sway him more?

the beating is one of the many perks of having younger siblings
I whitewashed my sister whenever she lit up to help her quit a few years ago...

for those who don't know the term, it's basically stuffing snow into every opening in the persons clothing, down the shirt, down the pants if they're sufficiently baggy, and of course in the face, filling shoes and socks is strictly optional

I smoked for 10 years and then quit for 3 years. I started smoking again in July after getting some bad news. I'm not even trying to quit again. So, please don't look here for advice. sorry

Any support is welcome and would be much appreciated. Feel free to email me if you have any tips to help me.

Don't smoke your first cigarette of the day...that is what sets off the continuing cravings. It'll take three days for the cravings to end and you can start actually forgetting that you smoked at all. Definitely hang out with non smokers until you are certain you have kicked the habit!

This comes from a heavy smoker of over 25 years with one lung that is half collapsed and carries pneumonia...quit while you are still young and can still breathe! It only gets harder as you get older and you're looking at developing asthma and emphysemia (sp?) as you get older...suffocating to death is not a pretty way to die if the potential to develop lung cancer does not take you out first.
