Anybody ever go through the game with just their original equipment?

i went through with less than my original equipment: a Naked Duo, Ninja-Monk, Martial Arts only, carried nothing but Final Mission-essential items. And Spellbooks they didn't qualify for yet.
One of my Import teams also gained no equipment. (they optimised what they imported, so what they had was better than Start kit) |

because i didn't want to have to go back and get them when i qualified! I didn't have some religious aspect of not carrying anything, just that i wanted to go through without any physical aid. (for that matter, your question could even have been, "why not leave the books where they are until you qualify?" and been answered the same)

How did your party get on? Are Ninjas as good as Monks at MA? Must admit I haven't thought of a MA Ninja although Seven (aka Atlus 7) did do a mini-Spotlight on a Ninja using MA. |

Spawn: create mobs. Lowest: lowest level, easiest. Wild cards: often way over your level, very hard. The other way around, if you enter a zone where your level is higher than any of the spawns for there, you get some really easy ones.
In other words, each zone has a range of mobs that spawn there. Most notable is Mountain Wilderness, where many try to go as early as possible to get the nice stuff you can get there by sneakery. The easiest monster that appears randomly there is L10, and the hardest L26. So if you enter there @L9, you might end up being roasted by some L26 Scorchers, but if you wait til L10, there's (usually) only some Flying Snakes and Fire Ants. @Krull: No, the Ninja is pretty worthless at MA, mostly because 125 in Crit is actually only a 5% chance of KIA, whereas the Monk's 125 in Martial Arts means lots more swings and damage. Plus the Monk KO'd a lot of stuff, and the Ninja doesn't get KO. But the Ninja's spells were more effective: Kills were somewhere around 20% higher for the Monk, but that has to be adjusted by the uncounted damageless kills from the Ninja's Death Clouds and Quicksands, which probably brought it much closer to even. I am not Scatter but since he doesn't appear to be here at this time I will try to explain "spawning" and "wild cards" for you Micha.
Spawning is the term used for the generation of random monsters that you will encounter in the game. Spawns are only for random creatures and not for those creatures who are always at a location like the King Crab and Gregor. They are not "spawned" they are referred to as a "fixed" encounter. "Wild Cards" means something pulled completely at random because specific conditions are not met. In Wizardry 8 certain maps you enter expect your party to have reached a certain character level prior to coming in to them. Since the random monster encounters are based on average party level if you take your party into an area that expects them to be level 15 and they are only level 5 it has nothing to base monster level on so it just puts in monsters that are about mid-range in level for that area. Hence the term wild card. The monsters are spawned without correlation to the party level because the game cannot make a proper comparrison. An example: I have entered the Mountain WIlderness with a party of level 5 characters. The monsters I saw were level 25 Bitter Wings and level 23 Blistering Scorchers. Pretty rough for a party at level 5. In the Mountain Wilderness about the lowest level monster I have ever seen spawn was level 13 Acid Wings and level 14 Nightwings. The highest I have seen there was a level level 34 Molten Scorcher. From this I surmised the Mountain Wilderness appears to expect the party to be around level 12-15 before coming there. Hope that helps a bit and doesn't confuse you more on this subject. Edit: Speak of the devil and he walks in. Snuck in on me Scatter while I was creating my long winded reply. [ 08-24-2004, 05:34 PM: Message edited by: Flamestryke ]

hah, beat you! But we have different info--i know 10's the lowest, i go there a lot then. I dunno about anything higher than 26 there, mostly because i'm almost never still in the game that high, and if i am, i have no need for the MW.

My Solo Dwarf Monk blows through there every now and then. She never did the nasty with Al-Sedexus so her one and only portal is on the Peak. I just run her over the landslide and be-pop through the Mountain Wilderness to Ferro. Since she is level 40 most of her encounters in MW are with Moltens and Bitterwings.
Cuts down a bit on the boredom of searching for enounters on the Peak. I know she'll always have a good time slaughtering Rapax harass teams in MW and hordes of Rapax in the Rift and Castle. She doesn't really use thrown weapons but every now and then I check in with Ferro and recharge items. And before any one questions it, I caused the Landslide on purpose. The walk through MW, Rift, and Castle are quite enjoyable after hours of ripping and running about the Peak. Its also a personal choice for this game that the Monk remains free of demonic contamination. Actually I had said from about level 10-15 for MW before I proofread my post. Level 10 is good for purists but I think Hybrids should be a little older before going to MW so I upped it a bit to compensate for that thought. You are right though, a party of level 10 will do ok in MW.
