well in short, they are "gods"
they are omnipotent, omnicient beings that can be anything and be anywhere and can do anything. they are so called "self apointed guardiangs of the universe" they live in the "q" continuum... that no human can understand. very interesting really.. since no one can rival them... sometimes i wish in the star trek fantasy that there could be some race that could rival them aside from themselves.. they came out in star trek voyager and next generation...

to me, Q is very annoying. just pop up somewhere he wants and do anything he wants. and in one episode nearly cause the destruction of human beings as well.
