My personal favorite bow is the Tuigan Bow +1 (short bow)

It doesn't have the best THACO bonus, but it does give you three shots per round, and with the archer's bonuses, you don't need to worry about hitting, just about how many times you can do it

There are also bows that don't require ammunition, but they come much later in the game; besides, I've never had trouble with running out of arrows to use

For early game options, I'd go for this one as well.

IMO, the Tansherons Bow is the best. Not because it needs no ammo but because it is a "+3" weapon (used without ammo). There are many creatures in the game which need a "+3" weapon at least but the best arrows in the game are all only "+2" so that the archer is helpless when using real arrows against these monsters (what the archer can hit is determined by the arrows he is firing, not by the bow he is using). You can get Tansherons Bow pretty early in the game (after finishing Cernd's quest).
As far as Gesen Bow is considered, yes, it is a "+4" weapon (used without ammo) but:
- you get it too late in the game
- it is s l o w . . . ..

I always like the Tuigan Bow as well - 3 shots/round is great for Assassins (or using Arrows of Biting) simply for three times poison damage. Even late in the game that firepower can excel.

Tansheron's is great for the elemental damage though (gets through stoneskin)

Elven court bow is good for early game.

I vote for the Tansheron as well. It is by far the best Bow in BG2, with it's lovely aforementioned abilities.

We must also not forget Gesen, with no required ammo, and electrcal damage. It also has a good THAC0-bonus (+4), and gives 20% Electrical resistance.

Another good one, is the Strong Arm. It is definetly the Bow that deals out the most damage using only simple arrows, being one of the few bows which gives a bonus to damage (+3). But then, it requires 19 Strength, meaning that it is naturally pretty much Half-Orc only.

Short Bows:
For a char with only 1 '*' in Short Bows (thief, f.i.): The Tuigan. It's easy to get and available really early in the game.

If you have more *'s then... I'd go for the Tansheron or the Gesen. They're both great bows.

Long Bows: Dunno, never used one (MMM + Improved Haste = Who needs a bow?)

unless you go to Brynlaw and the other places before going through the other places, that way you still have plenty of time to play after getting it re-built.
