GM does it the easy way, with fewer parts, and it makes sense? I almost died laughing when I read that sentiment. Don't get me wrong, I have 3 Chevrolets and had GMC trucks/vans before that.

HOW TO GET THE BATTERY OUT OF A CHEVROLET LUMINA
1)remove the three bolts that hold the crosspiece which makes it impossible to even get jumper cables in contact with your battery.
2)remove the two bayonet pins holding the water bottle to the frame.
3)remove the pump from the water bottle
4)remove the water bottle (I won't even try to explain how you get it past the fuse box)
5)remove the three bolts holding the bracket which hold the battery
6)remove the battery bracket (don't forget that it's holding the air filter in place)
7) remove the battery "cosy"
8)congratulations! You have now reached the battery

GM engineers had a Brain Fart when they designed the Lunima battery palacement My wife used to have a Lumina, I hated having to change the battery out or even check the water level.

WRX STi? Or something European? You can't not like cars altogether... can you?

I, personally, am a Holden lover but that does not mean that i dislike other brands. Ford however, well..

You pick one example out of thousands and try to make an argument out of it?

I could go on for days about fords.

I've already related how ford's diagnostics are brain damaged; here's some more:

Ask a mechanic why they charge 5 hours to change the spark plugs on a 2003 ford pickup truck. How about the plugs in an Aerostar? Or the plugs on a s/c 3.8 cougar/tbird?

Ever tried to change the oil filter on a Mystique with the V6? (without burning your hands on the 1300 degree cat, of course)

Cars these days are getting harder and harder to work on, and fords leading the way in obfuscated ways of doing things and packing crap in the engine compartment so you can't work on it.

edit> I almost forgot, if you think the battery in the lumina is bad; next time you look under the hood of a cirrus/stratus look for the battery.

Brand impression is just a hit or miss thing. Believe it or not there are people that love Yugos, or Citroens, or other brands well known as crap and wont hear otherwise.

That said, I have had 2 fords. One was an aerostar 91. It is listed in consumer reports as a year/model to avoid.
It was amazing, so many finely tuned peices set to fall apart one after another in perfection. It had only 90k miles when I had to give up on it. Bad transmission, engine cooling system. Basically everything although it was strong in a couple ways most american cars are not, it never went out of alignment.
WORST CAR EVER MADE!!! Do not get an aerostar. You see them on sale for cheap in used car mags... And you think well this is like the ford ranger with an ugly box isnt it cant be that bad... WRONG. This car was made by fords retarded canadian factories.

The other Ford I had was a 91 tempo, I had it at the same time. I also gave up on it, but to be fair I drove this one delivering pizza 30k miles a year for a year and ahalf. I ran into a curb and ruined the front end, although i kept driving it for a few thousand miles after. Not the worst car I ever had, but numerous brake and electrical problems. I definitely abused it.

Well for life Ive decided Fords are bad whether its fair or not. I have a Dodge van now, and it has given me no problems. In fact it has been almost amazing although i maintain it very well. I dont believe Dodge has the best reputation in the world but mine is amazing. SO I suppose fortune has made me hate ford and love Dodge( and also nissan) but it could have gone any other way and Id think the opposite.
If you look closely you will notice that I wasn't GM bashing, just picking out what my are problems. I do have 2 Lumina's. I haven't owned a Ford in 25 years and am not planning on getting another. You are correct in that they are all a pain to work on.

Maybe we should start a thread on how dumb car manufacturers can be. I'll see your cirrus/stratus and raise you a Nissan van. To add water for the windshield wipers you have to open the tailgate. It's up top on the drivers side.

I'll call that Nissan and raise you 1984 Chrysler Laser turbo. 1st turbo used engine oil to lubrcate the turbo. DOH.
2nd side ways mounted motor with 3 motor mounts. 2 centered on the sides and 1 centered in the front conected to the sheet metal by a 18in long 3/4in wide. 1/4in thick piece of steel that had to take ALL the torque of the enigine. I had to get a friend's dad to weld a angle iron piece across the entire front to stop the spliting of the sheet metal.

Yeah, those chrysler turbo-4s can be a pain. Try fixing those oil and coolant lines without taking the head off - and they do leak.

Fortunately, you do head gaskets on those bi-metal engines every 100K, whether it needs it or not.
