Sorry to hear about that Wendy. I can think of no reason for drilling holes in the foundation. Somebody was an idiot! Home Depot probably has something to fill them, but I have no idea how long it would last. You might have to clean them out and refill them every once in awhile when they start leaking again.

Perhaps they thought that drilling holes in floor would make the water run out by itself (And I that was the case i'd have to agree with LoA's statement about their intellect )

That sucks. Happened t my grandparents' though not as serious. On the bright side, you could try mounting a tiny outboard engine on one of those inflatable chairs... I've always wanted to try that.

LadyZ is the basement still flooding or has it finally subsided?

The only other reason that I can think of for the drilling might be that the previous owners might have somehow accidentally flooded the basement and had someone bore through the concrete to let it drain out. There are definately betters ways, but I have seen some people have some strange things done to their property trying to resolve something without really thinking of better solutions.

ROTFL Jeffi0!

Thanks everyone for all your replies. Have talked to several people lately about those holes, and it seems the consensus is that the holes might have been made because of termites (not the termites eating the concrete, but a way the exterminator treats for them). I have never had termites before, but I guess maybe they drill holes in your floor to pop in poison or something, but are supposed to seal the holes back up correctly (which wasn't done methinks in my case). I know there supposedly were a couple of trees in the front and back yard before we moved in, according to the neighbors. Maybe they died and termites came? Beats me. Whatever trees used to be here are long gone, stumps and all. Either way, no doubt those holes will have to be filled up properly now, or this will happen again since we are on the low side of the water table.

PS - While wet vaccing and cleaning the basement, found some papers printed off the net in the ceiling in the basement LOL! Pics of people urinating. I was thinking about lodging a complaint to the previous homeowners about those holes and the fact that they didn't say the basement leaked, but now... no.. nope.. I think I'll play keep away on that one!

You might want to get someone to look at that foundation. Most people don't drill holes in foundations for nothing.

Well we had a VERY good inspector come in before we bought the house, he had mostly good things to say about the place. Pretty sure though he didn't see the holes though, as again the entire basement floor was painted with this grey shiny paint (which is peeling off now because of the water).

LOL, I wish I could find that old thread from 2001 that Cloudy made for me "hose hunting" (she made a typo in the thread topic, which was unchangeable back then), I posted about some of the houses we were going to look at when searching to buy, one was really bad, so bad it was hilarious.
