Can't do that in the states because then the theif can sue you for damages, pain and suffering and mental distress. I think the "professional" theif can even claim Workers Comp.
Yeah I've heard about ridiculous cases like that in the US. It's pretty stupid, I mean ok so you can't kill someone just cos they're burgling your house for example, but you should be able to use reasonable force to "make them go away". In any sensible court, if a man gets injured when burgling a house it should be their fault not the owner's (exception being when they owner himself does the injuring - but falling, trippig anything not directly caused by another human - even being bitten by a guard dog is the theif's fault!) - they shouldn't have been there in the first place. Anything else is just ridiculous and I'm thinking now of the case where a burglar got injured or something while burgling and then sued the homeowner.

I feel your pain, Memnoch. I've been fortunate enough to never have my car broken into, but I did surprise a couple of kids I'm certain were trying to steal a ride once.

Car alarms may not stop the thieves, but they certainly do scare them away. I highly recommend them, especially the "transparent" kind that are activated and deactivated by using the keyfob that activates the central locking system.

Good luck tracking down and beating the sn- I mean "educating" the culprits.

Sad news, indeed. The culprits definately deserve a butt-kicking for goodness.

You know, every darned time I look at the title of this thread, my mind reads "some morMon broke into my car" and I get these very funny pictures in my head. Sorry, did I say that out loud?

Hi! I'm a missionary with the Church of Latter Day Saints. I hate riding this stupid bike and I was wondering if I could borrow a wire clothes hanger and a screwdriver?

That totally sucks, Memnoch. We had something like that happen here a few years ago. Apparently, some jerk kids were out walking around the neighborhood and for fun decided that they wanted to break car windows, and ours was one of those that got hit. Luckily, it wasn't a car we had invested a lot into (we kept those in the garage), but it was upsetting nonetheless.

Yeah, well, an update: I just got a call from my lease company's accident management department - guess how much the damage was - TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. That's $10,000. Say it again - ten THOUSAND. Holy sh!t!!!!!

I had no idea it was going to be that much, and I'm so glad that it's a lease car and I'm not paying for any of it (other than the $500 excess) and that my insurance premiums for the next four years are already locked away and are paid pretax, but I sympathise with other people taking out insurance policies with NRMA - their premiums are all going to go up. All because of the dikhead/s who broke into it!! And he didn't even end up stealing anything anyway, so it was just a massive waste of time for everyone.

Not only that, apparently the repairer will need to replace the entire dash, not just the centre console - and some of the parts have to be flown in from Italy, which is going to take at least 2 weeks. So the earliest I'll get my car will be the 15th of March.

My sister's been kind enough to loan me her MGF convertible so that I can get to and from work and it's a nice enough car - but it's not the same...

Bloody bastards.

$10000?????

How the **** can anyone do $10000 worth of damage? Thank goodness you don't have to stump up for all of that, although the excess is a pig.

On a similar (although less serious) note - someone gobbed on my scooter last night. Vile bastard.
