Well there I was befor Mae`Var´s Guild. After I did all the quests for Renal Bloodscalp i was orderd to kill MaeVar.So let me tell you about my party, weapons and this things.
Party:
Me-Sorcerer
Jaheira
Yoshimo
Edwin
Kivan

Equipment:
My Sorecerer has Robe Of Vecna
Jaheira has nothing
Yoshimo has Daystar and Leather Armor
Edwin has nothing
Kivan has Huntsman Bow(From Bernard In Coper Coronet

So the first floor was quite easy. Then i went to the lower floor to kill MaeVar.Those pesky Assasains constantly backstabbing me so i lived a quick death. So i was changing tactic and i didn´t what to do,because Assasains constantly hid in Shadows. Then i rememberd on a spell True Sight.

This is the folowing tacticn the first floor I casted Haste. On the next floor Yoshimo set a trap.Jaheira casted True Sight.I went down.Edwin has casted his first Web spell.Jaheira ran up to him and casted Inacery Cloud.Edwin has casted Cloudkill.I casted Melf´s Minute Meteor and attack first Assasain. He fell fairly quick. Then Imp by name Schracy.Edwin then casted Grease.Next Assasain down. Then Fireballs came into play.Damage done. Then Kivan strats shooting with his Called Shot ability.Next two Assasains down. Then Cleric. For him Jaheira casted Insect Plague.Poor guy couldn`t cast spells so sucker died.Only MaeVar to go.Five minutes and he is gone.So quest done.

Poor MaeVar now is pushing up dasies.

Kick butt! I've yet to try the improved version, but if it's like the other improvements, it must be tough!

WELL DONE XEN!!!

I made a couple of very bad tactical mistakes before facing Mae'var myself. First of all, Minsc was very upset about allowing Edwin to join the party. No problem...I was planning on replacing him with Korgan anyway. Aerie is Lawful Good and my assassin is Neutral Evil. She was constantly complaining about me not being bothered by just walking up to somebody and killing them. Minsc had also taken her for his new "witch".

Sooo, I kicked them out of the party. That just left my assassin, Jaheira, Yoshimo, and Edwin. After getting permission from Renal to kill Mae'var (and gain my stronghold), I headed back to the Guildhouse.

I had some trouble in the lobby because groups of reinforcements "popped in", even though I had shut both doors leading into the lobby. Finally cleared the upper levels and got ready for Mae'var.

I cast all my "buff spells" and drank potions Strength and Speed. The next big mistake I made was to have Edwin cast 3 of his Monster Summoning spells BEFORE going downstairs. The monsters appeared, then just stood at the top of the stairs looking at us as we went to the basement. Three wasted spells.

So far, I haven't been able to beat Improved Mae'var and his crew. They attack so quickly that Yoshimo and my assassin have no time to set traps. I thought I had good spell preparation for Edwin. I was planning on hitting the group with Web, Cloudkill, Fireball, Fireball. I thought that should at least seriously injure a couple of them. NO LUCK. I did manage to finally hit them with both Fireballs, but none of the assassins were hurt passed being BARELY INJURED.

{sigh}It looks like I may have to go back and start from the beginning again. I can certainly see the need for a couple of spells I don't have (like Grease). I also plan to add Korgan and Viconia to my party. Much as I hate to do it, I may have to pick them up before heading back to Mae'var. An extra tank and spellcaster could come in very handy.

I'm ashamed to admit I ended up getting sick of this fight and just ctrl-Ying every except Mae'Var, making it my 6 against just him. I abandoned this game altogether soon after and uninstalled the mod in favour of Improved Nalia mod (I don't know if there's a Weimer version of either, but as stand-alone mods they're incompatible). I'm also working up courage to install Tactics, and have another go at improved Mae'Var, but that's for after my current game which is my first solo attempt (going well). playing solo I'm learning lots of new tactics that I think will help me when it comes time to take on these harder mods.

Truer words were never spoken. It depends on your class, of course, but i'm guessing you're gonna have so many tactics that you wont know which one to pick in any future party campaign. Playing solo really gives a much deeper understanding of how BG2 works.

I'm going to be facing him soon - with a solo Assassin. I'm prepared to reload somewhat.

A tactic I've always used successfully in the past is to lay the traps BEFORE going back to Bloodscalp. In a party game leaving a fire elemental (courtesy of Jaheira) down there works well too. Pity a solo assassin gets no long term summons...

OLAF - Are you using the Tactics Mod with Improved Mae'var??? The reason I ask is because I've had Edwin open with the following sequence:

Grease
Ice Storm
Fireball
Fireball

The Grease slows the assassins down long enough for me to hit them with all three "damage" spells....but NONE of them are more than "Barely Injured" after being hit with all 3 spells. I've lost count of how many re-loads I've had to do.

I started with just my assassin, Yoshimo, Jaheira, and Edwin. Quickly realized that wasn't going to work. I loaded a Previously Saved Game and returned to the Coppor Coronet to recruit Korgan for hack-n-slashing. STILL got my butt kicked with frustrating regularity. Back to the Previous Game again. This time, I also went to the Gov't District and added Viconia to my party. Have to pick some new spells and try again.

Baros - That is a GREAT idea of setting the traps BEFORE going back to Renal. This is just my second trip through BGII and I forgot that Mae'var and company are automatically hostile after they've been exposed. I DO have a Saved game that far back, but I would hate to have to clean out the upper floors AGAIN!. Still, that may be what I have to do. My current strategy isn't working too well so far.
