Oh, they're playing the game alright; they're the ones running it!
The first thing in the process should be finding a DM, unless, of course, you decide to become one, then you'll need PCs.

*Also, make sure you have a reliable DM. They're pretty hard to come by.

Also, there is no THACO in 3rd edition?
Nope. Armor classes go up as well; so no more -7 and -9s. You roll the d20 for your "to hit" and add in modifiers. If your "to hit" goes above the opponents AC, you roll for damage. Whichever die you use for damage (by the weapon you're using), you roll that and add modifiers to see how many hitpoints you subtract from the opponent's HP.

There are exceptions of course, and it is a lot more complex that it seems. You have to add in initiative, surprise attacks, feats, immunities and resistances, etc. I've tried being a DM once, and I failed horribly.

When you do manage to find some people to play with, try to be as diverse as possible. I've played 2 characters, going to be 3 in a few days, and I've played a different race and class each time.
(Hmm.. dwarf fighter the first run through, human sorceress the second, and halfling rogue this time coming up)

All in all, have fun. That's what the game is intended for, right?
