okay here is the thing, i just started downloading old old old games in the internet. mainly, romance of the three kingdoms (1992 game) but the problem is there is not enough memory. i know this game is old and it has different expanded memory than the newer computers. so i was wondering if any of you guys have a program (USER-FRIENDLY) to help me with my memory in order to play. another is master of orion 1 game. i also downloaded another game and i dont know if any of you guys know this one. this was my favorite first game when i was still a child. it is called ancient art of war 1984 game. anyway, the problem is that the program moves so fast that i cant do anything, i was wondering if there is any FREEWARE program that could slow my pc processor so i could play it. all the programs i searched is all sharware.. groan.. help?

*im not really good in configuring autoexec and config.sys so it would be helpful for a step by step detail. i hate to crash my comp ( i just had it fixed a couple of months ago )

I have posted this before in another forum...

Sample config.sys
Files=99
Device=C:\Windows\Himem.sys
Device=C:\Windows\Emm386.exe AUTO RAM
(or was it RAM AUTO?)
Dos=high,umb

Sample autoexec.bat
@echo off
Set Path=C:\Windows;C:\Windows\Command
LH (dos mouse driver)
LH (dos soundcard driver)

Press F8 during the initial Windows startup screen and select "Start with Command Prompt only". Once the boot up sequence is completed, execute the game and enjoy.

BTW, the above only applies to Win95 and Win98

I have came across a few programs which are able to slow down the CPU but if you are running these old games on P4, the CPU might even be too fast even after applying the slowdown program.

Most of them are not free but why pay for something which does not really work? If I am very serious into playing old games, I would invest a little bit of money to acquire an old PC, say something like 486DX4/100.

Yes, except these two lines:

LH (dos mouse driver)
LH (dos soundcard driver)

You actually need to replace the dos driver of your hardware. For example:

LH C:\DOSMOUSE\MOUSE.EXE (This is just an example)

Moslo is probably the best of the CPU decelerators. Its freeware for the basic version, but if you need speeds lower than 1% you need the deluxe version. And with a modern machine you may need speeds way lower than 1%.

Also, when you go looking for those drivers, you will almost certainly not have them installed already. You will have to get the soundcard one from the original manufacturer which is usualy not too tricky. The mouse may be harder since M$ stopped distributing their official DOS driver some time ago. I dont have a live link to it right now, but I'll dig it out when I get home. Google should be able to turn one up easily enough though.

romance of the 3 kingdoms is located in abandongames.com and you register and look for it up. note there are 6 different kind of versions.. i dont know which version you played so all of them are just about the same. oh yeah if you have ps2 then there is version 7 for that.. if you have ps1, then you have version 6 for that.. heck i didnt even know there was a game for that in ps1

FYI, you can downlod these CPU decelerator program to test:

Bremze

moslo

CPU Killer

There is also a bootdisk program called BEEHIVE which I have downloaded from one of the abandonware site but I can't remember where. I will poste the link once I have located the site.
