The Georgia Tech coach was upset when what he regarded as an inferior team went ahead of him in the polls, because of a higher margin of victory. He called up somebody at Cumberland and offered them $250 for their student fund if they would play his team the next Saturday. (They previously had a bye) Poor Cumberland didn't even have a football team, so they got 12 guys to volunteer and trooped off to Atlanta. The final score shows what a colossal mismatch it was. Even today, Cumberland remains perversely proud of the record, and defends it with zeal.
Thanks for the info, Attalus. I always wondered how that game could be SO lopsided. It makes much more sense now.

LOL, you are welcome, Cerek. That was in a book that I read in college that I never forgot. Also said that the Cumberland punter was a guy named Gray, and he had to punt so often, that the announcer saying "Gray back to punt" became a catchphrase. Punters were known as "Graybacks" for years.

Was there an opposing team?
