2d3 would be the result of the combined total of 2 rolls of a 3 sided die, for instance a 1 and a 3 the result would be 4. 1d5 would be the result of one roll of a 5 sided die, in other words 1-5. youll most commonly see d4 d6 d8 d10 d12 and d20 as those are the stardard d&d dice.

1d3 is a six sided die (1-2=1, 3-4=2, 5-6=3) a 1d5 works the same way bt with a ten sided die as the base instead of a 6

For
AdB + C ,
A is the number of dice.
d means "dice" - everywhere you see this general format, you`re rolling dice.
B is the number of sides each die has.
C is added onto the total after you roll.

Meaning, 1d8 + 3 translates to
Roll one 8 sided die, and add three to your roll.

Actually, 5-Sided Dices do exist, and I own one of them because I use them for my Warhammer 40K Games.

Dang weird shape I will tell you that much.

One thing I am grateful for about CRPGs... no manual rolling of 30d6... fun as it may be... counting the total is tedious.

My entire collection of "game" dices.

3 War40K d6
30 minature black d6, each about 2mm by 2mm Dang useful for mass rolling.
2 d20
6 medium white d6
2 red d6
1 d5
1 d4
2 d8
2 d10

And that is it.
Funny, when I play warhammer 1d5 is got by rolling 1d6 discard sixes. Or 1d10 subtract 5 if over 5. And when in the new edition do you roll 1d5? I know 3rd had all those weird armour penetration rolls for heave weapons, but not in the new edition AFAIK. SO whats this 1d5 look like? Bet its not a fair dice anyway.

Agree 100% on the tedium though, once managed to lose a terminator squad to gretchin. 100 gretchin. In close combat. Took ages to count up.

I stopped playing War40K when they released the 3rd Edition. Funny how it is always the 3rd Edition that turns off players. I do not have a photo ready, and the best I can describe it is that it looks like a very deformed diamond.

About the Gretchin, LOL! I was recalling an almost similar scenerio. I saved a lot of times... but I can roll 4+ on 2d6 only so much. I am starting to get off-topic though, so this will be where I stop.
