Some monitors degauss when you turn them. Sometimes the screen wavers and you here a humming sound when turn it on.

And I dont have an imac. Cant remember the symbol for it either. Your monitor manual should cover degaussing though, or a mac tech site.
Thanks! I found out that Macs automattically degauss when they restart, and works best when it is shut off and lets the comp. time to cool down.

If thats the case then since the monitor is being degaussed and is still showing distortion, its probably permanent damage. Probably theres and unshielded speaker or main power cable nearby. Try moving it and powering/unpowering it a few times - you may get lucky.

If your wondering, degaussing simply removes stray magnetic fields inside the monitor. If these build up, the picture becomes distorted. If they build up too much, the components of the monitor become magnetised and its time to get a new monitor. Anything that puts out a decent magnetic field can cause this kind of damage.

I case your wondering where magnets might hide .... besides the refrig type ... powerful speakers designed for home theatres/stereos, motors (like large fans), and coiled wire carrying high current (why anyone would have this in their house ??) OH and the big red horse shoe !

speakers designed for computers are ok.

As far as I know, its always there. And that would be terrible if it was the monitor....I have a mac!
All the more reason to get a PC
