Always prefer cats, but like dogs too. Best ones are mix breeds. Also any that look like their ancestors (wolves, coyotes). My very special favorite was my first dog, one that was found on the side of the road in the middle of summer. Quiet, smart, and beautiful; black with white markings, short thick fur, bushy tail, gold eyes, never barked, was very brave when he had to have a leg removed (brother-in-law ran over him), if anyone seemed threatening to me or my son he would get in front of us and give the other person a look. My second (favorite) one was a chow mix (tricky father) and he was like a huge teddy bear. He also thought he was a cat until he was almost full grown. My son's dog is a lab, hound mix with blond fur and a slightly bloodhound look to her face. She's an idiot, but the cats put up with her.
