The first time I ever heard my wife use the "F" word was when I was teaching her how to drive a car with a 5 speed manual transmission. She said something like like "I'll never learn how to drive this ****ing car!". It surprised the hell out of me, because she rarely swears.

To make a long story short...she did learn, not too long afterwards and she is a pretty good driver IMHO!

Having jsut passed here are my tips

Get a professional teacher.
Take their advice, not parents, they tell you how to pass test.
Don't drive with parents for a long period of time.
Practise the theory bit (unless you don't need to be tested on the highway code where you live)
remember- the test will require you to-

drive at a reasonale speed, near to the limit
be a careful driver
be not too cautious
act like you know what you are doing

I have been a professional driver over 20 years... that means driving commercially. I have been paid to drive all my adult life. I have a license to drive passenger buses and tractor-trailers. Did delivery, flowers and pizza - and drove fuel trucks.

I didn't get my license until I was 18.

I took the test 3 times. Yes, my dad taught me at first... sigh.

The best way I learned was actually driving with my brother (who got his license at 16) and he just sat there and let me work it out for myself.
Go somewhere that isn't very populated, and just work the gears.

I have learned how to drive buses and trucks... with a thought that I would one day get good at this. It became an obsession.

After 20 years, I still learn something new everyday.

Red, this is something you will get good at, but like ANYTHING else in life, you get better with experience. Just use the best judgment you have, because your life and others is literally on the line. That is what concerns every parent.

By the way, your father is one of the types that you don't need to be like. Be patient and alert. Be kind behind the wheel to others. Be your best self behind the wheel.

i dont like to boast but..
if anyone wants to become a professional driver, come on to the Philippines.... you can find 100% reckless drivers everywhere. but once youve mastered that, plus getting around our city, you can drive nealy everywhere in the world.
for a clearer picture, just imagine sydney (australia) everyday traffic is just our sunday traffic here... and US traffic is heaven for us... sigh.

What is it with cars anyway? They just hate me. I Oversteer understeer, run into curbs, turn wrong, you name it i've done it at least a few times. (Except for giving the wrong signal.) I haven't done that yet! Seems like i'll never get very good at *this*!

How long have you been driving? Sounds like you're still pretty new to it, so don't get discouraged, just practice. If you can't find a trainer like everyone says, just drive around a parking lot for a while. Preferably one with curbs to practice turning, not just a big open space. Church parking lots are great because they're usually empty except for sundays, and you don't really want any cars in your way when you're practicing. [img]smile.gif[/img]

That's excellent advice Deathcow!
I started driving when I was 15. I took advantage of having others drive for years and watched everything I could so that I would know how to handle a car by the time I was old enough to get behind the wheel. My first time behind the wheel, my sister wouldn't let me cross the highway and made me pull into a dirt lot to trade places. I (intentionally) pulled a "brody" (a 360 degree slide) before coming to a stop and had her under the dashboard screaming for her life while I LMAO.
I ended up driving without a license until I was 26, owning at least ten cars and a couple of trucks as well LOL...never got ticketed and never got into any accidents...following the rules of the road and paying attention to what other drivers are doing can go a long way toward keeping you safe.

Do take some trusted friends with you into that parking lot...frinds who will be patient and not make you feel stupid for making any mistakes. Like riding a bicycle, it takes practice to get good at it and comfortable with it.

EDIT: I like automatics....my motto was always "I have to drive to work, why should I have to work to drive?"

They are much easier when learning...all that clutch and shift crap can come later when you feel like expanding your knowledge of the art of driving. [img]smile.gif[/img]
