It maybe silly but I just wonder if the words the characters say when casting spells are part of a real langugae. If thats the case, which?

There was a thread about that half a month ago IIRC. The words are latin. but very corrupt, and the translation has something to do with the school or effect of the spell.

I always thought it was Swedish, but...
![]() You'll have noticed the wordings are different for each school of magic, but the same for each spell within that school. For Necromantic spells, for example, the character shouts something soundign roughly like Vitac, Mortis, Ahajajay. I'll probably have the spelling wrong, but As far as I know (admittedly not that far on this subject) 'mort' is a latin word meaning 'death'. Quite appropriate for a necromantic spell, no? It would follow that the other words are also (derived from) latin or another language like it. Once again, I could be completely wrong ![]() EDIT: Glad to see I wasn't [ 10-17-2002, 07:59 AM: Message edited by: Legolas ] |

I thought I noticed something like that.....
My Necromancer was casting a necromancy spell, and I heard "Mortise" (Sp.). I knew that that meant death in some language, though I wasn't sure what. I don't know anyone that speaks Latin. Maybe I'll learn! Just so I can work out what all these mean! ![]() |

The chant for Necromancy spells is "Vita (life), Mortis (death)," and then something that sounds like "Carrio (whatever...)".
Illusion spells go, "Vertias, reydo, HUP!" Veritas is Latin for truth, so presumably the rest of the incantation is about hiding the truth. Male and female spellcasters use different sound files for each of the 8 schools of magic, although both genders say the same words. Also, the duration of the chant is determined by the casting time of the spell. Fortuna statu variabilis est--ergo, draco dormiens nunquam tittilandus. In my Computer Science class, we were doing recursion a couple of weeks ago, and I managed to work the line, "Ne invoces expellere non possis" into my code. Translation: "Do not call up that which you cannot put down." That's actually a quote from one of the games in the BG series--can anybody who's just as anal-retentive as I am tell me where? I can't quite remember but the phrase is also on a Magic card.
