You are creating and enhancing nothing but a bloated morally-broken beauracratic police state. Breaking away from our history and denying the "reality" of human nature which is to seek a better standard of life.

Ah Official English. A seemingly symbolic (but very much not) legal concept with a pretty interesting history that reads like a labyrinth populated by immigrants (going as far back as those pesky Germans of Benjamin Franklin's day), Native Americans, and closet fascists.
This is pretty much the most important work by the only relevant writer on the subject. He's mostly interested in education. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homep...RAWFORD/ll.htm And the Cliff's Notes, 'I have no time for this' version. What I read of it is supported in historical detail by the prior work, which I've read. http://users.rcn.com/crawj/langpol/O...EnglishFAQ.pdf The other is a matter I'm not learn-ed about. Consider this a foot-note. |

I'm not saying you prejudice other languages. I'm just saying make English official.
With no official language, you have a problem. In Florida, lawsuits were filed by immigrants claiming their children had a RIGHT to be taught in Spanish. Now, FL has bilingual schooling. Teaching a child math and history in Spanish only slows down their pace in learning English. South FL is becoming a Spanish-speaking land -- my sister-in-law works at a bank and got cussed at yesterday by a customer who was pissed that the teller didn't speak Spanish. She said, "This is Miami, why the hell don't you speak Spanish!" THe language problem becomes a big issue when you have 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants who don't learn the language. |

More and more it occurs to me that our country is too damn big. What on Earth do I know about why making English the official language the country? What could it possibly mean to me? How could some of the issues I have to deal with be relevant to a farmer in the Midwest somewhere? And how can I be expected to care about their issues? People who don't live near borders can't possibly see immigration the same way as folk who live near borders.
The language problem doesn't matter to me, because I don't have to deal with it. And for all I know, the ERA and gay marriage don't matter in some other parts of the country. But I guess there's nothing we can do about it, as people already tried to secede. Oh hwell.
Fixed that for ya.
You haven't fixed anything- just added word and changed meaning. It has already been clearly demonstarted that terms like "legal" and "illegal" are highly mutable and can be totally dis-connected from a moral concept of right and wrong. And such a statement isn't supported by the facts I can find either: http://trac.syr.edu/tracins/findings...nsHistory.html Check out the link. Immigration control seem to be based on one stupid premise or another from the beginning. Early attempts were blatantly political or overly racist. A failed concept that continues to fail. It does work GREAT for big bloated nanny government.

I am glad to see that NC is not one of the people on that list of reps. Yay for me!
Also, about NC. An illegal friend of mine told me that a new rule has come into place in NC that requires one show proof of a real SS# before you can obtain or renew your driver's license. Already in some parts of the state, people have gone to renew their licenses and were told to leave because they could not provide the necessary papers to get their licenses renewed. NC was the state that had the fastest growing Hispanic population because we were one of the only states left where it was so easy to get a license with no real papers. Now that has changed and I hear that Maryland will probably want to go to war with us because since they are the only state now that does not require a SS# to get a license, already a migration of illegals to Maryland from NC has begun. |

I believe the ‘European’ policy on dealing with illegal immigration was mentioned earlier in this thread. Allow me to point out that our system has recently changed. Yes, the various EU-countries are still patrolling to Mediterranean together (and will continue to do so), but the European Commission has recently realized that it is impossible to keep out the waves of illegal immigrants who try to cross the sea in their makeshift rafts on a daily basis. For each illegal they find adrift in the sea, another few hundred land on the Span-ish, Maltese or Italian coasts. The new policy is attempting to cut off illegal immigration at the source. For instance, by providing more jobs locally, but also by increasing the possibilities for legal immigration. As for cutting back on UN payments, I’d like to point out that ‘Europe’ gives 55- to 60 percent of all global aid. Although we also tend to leech the Third World dry with our agricultural policies (which are slowly changing, thank god).

The Moroccan authorities are also more cooperative now, which should also make things easier to control, seeing as Morocco is usually the staging point from which the golddiggers try to make it across.
