He remained calm and silent throughout the punishment.....the punishment is too lenient.

Good Heavens! NO!!

I do agree with putting the murderers to death, but the flogging/hanging method is too savage to be deemed legal in a civilised society (note: I am NOT saying the Iranians are uncivilised, just to clear any misunderstandings).

now back on topic:

Was it too harsh? yes, IMO

I can just imagine the trauma the murderers family must be going though .

I would imagine they've been publicly turfed out of their village, probably at the end of a boot.

I, too, would not want to be in their shoes.

Still, a swift disowning might do the job.

Barbarians treated barbarically, how fitting... assuming the trial was fair.

I think another question is behaving like what we loath acceptable to punish even more loathsome behavior? For example can a person who truly loathes murder support the death penalty and yet not become more like a murderer?

The killing and sexual abuse of one child is one too many.

The muderers deserved no less. They lost their human rights the second they contemplated doing something like that.

The world doesn't need freakin' sickos like those, so don't even start to feel remotely sorry for them.

If I was family of the victims, yes, I too would want revenge against the murderers too, in a manner befitting the crime. Completely justified IMO.

How can anyone feel pity towards these God-damned murderers?! DID YOU NOT READ WHAT THEY HAD DONE?

I doubt this has anything to do with giving the relatives a sense of closure or anything like that. It's probably more a exercise of power by the Iranian government, to show the massses that they're still in charge and capable of handling even the worst criminals.

You weren't saying it, you were implying it (and still are, given the phrasing).

Well, perhaps civilization could be defined as the rule of law. The stabbing, for one, sounded quite unscripted and spontaneous - definitely wouldn't happen in my dictatorship! The moment the officials lose control of the course of events is when we move from civilized behaviour to barbaric IMO.

Even in Britain public floggings and hangings really haven't been gone for that long in the grand scheme of things. Most of our notions of human rights and modern concepts of 'civilized behaviour' are very very new really and thus the idea that they hold some kind of inner truth is still a bit of a leap of faith IMO.

I feel this was not harash. For one thing it is sending a very powerful message to other people that are thinking about some similar crime. Not that it would stop them but may make them think about. I think it could have been more harash then what it was. I also agree the guy was to calm. Maybe they cut his hid tounge out.
