(CNN) -- Entertainer George Carlin said Monday he is going into rehab because he has an alcohol and drug problem.

In a statement, Carlin, 67, said, "I'm going into rehab because I use too much wine and Vicodin. No one told me I needed this; I recognized the problem and took the step myself.

"My levels of use are nowhere near the worst you hear about these days; I could easily have continued functioning at a good level ... for awhile. But my use would have progressed, I would have been in deeper trouble, and I didn't want to tolerate that. I've never been in rehab before and I know it isn't easy, but I'm highly motivated, and will do what ever's needed.

"When I get out, I will take a little time for myself before resuming my schedule," the comedian added.

Carlin's current book, "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?", is currently on best-seller lists.

Vicodin is a pain killer that is potentially habit forming.

Carlin's statement did not say where he intends to go into rehab or when. According to Reuters, Carlin's spokesman, Jeff Abraham, said the comedian went into treatment Monday.

Three weeks ago, he ended a four-year run at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a "dark set," in the words of the New York Post's "Page Six" column, and told his audience, "People who go to Las Vegas, you've got to question their [bleeping] intellect," according to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

He is scheduled to appear in a show at Las Vegas' Stardust Hotel in February
Heh... Entertainer? Whenever I cite him in papers he's a social commentator. Ah well... Get well soon, you bum. I had tickets to see you in three weeks!
They were good tickets, too... Feh.

The drug was just Vicoden. He had pain, and ended up becoming addicted. Nothing bad like Cocaine.. Which is good.

Carlin is basically rude, crude, and socially unacceptable - which is why so many people think his material is outrageously hilarious. He makes fun of just about everybody in his act. His language is extremely vulgar and I don't particularly care for his slams on religion - but I can understand why others find such material to be so funny.

Here is a link to his website. George Carlin. I think you can listen to some snippets of his material and/or read some others. Just reading his commentary on the home page and a few others will give you a taste of what his material is like.

As for the rehab, I have no doubt that George HAS done serious amounts of cocaine and other illicit drugs, but he is 67 and most people tend to start weaning away from the hard stuff as they get older. I do respect him for recognizing and admitting that he has a problem and needs some help with it. Most people (and especially celebrities) would not be that bold - but George Carlin has never cared what others thought about him, so it makes since he wouldn't be worried about "what people might say" about this either.

I do wish him a successful and speedy rehab. He is hilarious (most of the time anyway) and I hope he will be back to work very soon.

Go George...
He'll be out of this soon, he's a tough old bastard. I love his material, seen him in Vegas a few times and caught one show here in Seattle years ago.
Funny, bright, and insightful commentary.
Get well soon, George.

George is an equal opportunity hater. He rips on everyone I can think of. Some times he is hilarious.....at other times he ends up coming off as just rude and vulgar.....for a while it looked like he was just another bitter old man who was circling the drain....but he pulled him self up a bit...and now is in Rehab...I wish him the best.

Where to start? This is from memory... He once condensed the Ten Commandments into the Two Commandments ("Let's be frank. Most of it is padding. It's only ten commandments because ten sounds official! Ten sounds IMPORTANT! You think they could have gotten people to believe them if it was any other number? 'What do you have there, the Eleven Commandments? Get the hell out of here!'"

He riffs a lot on religion, politics, language, and everyday moments. He's not for children... You might learn a new word or two listening to him. If you can get past that, he's utterly hilarious. I've seen him once already, and my sides hurt from laughing; I had to wipe tears of laughter from my face when he finished.
