i read from different texts and Atlantis was actually a continent NOT a singular place. so maybe parts of this continent extends and includes Cyprus. btw, don't forget about Bimini Island found near florida and bermuda triangle.

On the one hand, no serious archaeologist would classify their find as "Atlantis", unless one is looking for an attention-grabbing headline.
On the other hand, there are several sunken cities that have been found, including one off the coast of Japan, part of ancient Alexandria (Egypt), etc. The cause of the sinking is usually volcanic, earthquake, or both. Atlantis itself, is merely a catch-all name for a civilization that did exist thousands of years before any other recorded civilization in Egypt, China, the Indus Valley, or elsewhere (remember Chatal Huyuk in present-day Turkey?). There is evidence that such a civilization must have existed--the arising of similar ideas in nearly every part of the world at nearly the same time could be the result of such a civilization disseminating already-known sceince and technology after its own downfall. A supervolcano or mega-tsumani (or both) could erase nearly all the evidence of such a civilization; nearly 75,000 years ago genetic research shows that the human race hit a "bottleneck", meaning much of the human population of the world was killed off at one time. Perhaps we simply haven't found Atlantis yet, but it is so difficult to see beneath the kilometers of ice covering Antartica (all other continents are equally accessible from Antarctica, by the way). ![]() I've always had a theory that at one time the Med. sea was nearly dry, when the ice caps melted the sea level rose. It rose to the point that the Atlantic came crashing into the Med. Basin, that's why the ark came to rest in Turkey. Look at your bath tub, if massive amounts water come rushing in from one direction it rolls across and spills out the other side. Water is a powerful force it wouldn't take long for water to cut a path in sand and dirt, opening up the Straits of Gil.

I don't know about the Mediterranean Sea (the straight of Gibraltar is very deep and is generally believed to have been that way for a long time) but something very similar to what you described is believed to have happened in what we now call the Black Sea (which at the time was a smaller fresh water lake). There was a natural dam, the water levels rose when the ice-age ended, the dam broke, a huge area was flooded.

Weren't there a thread about this here at IW awhile ago, Seraph?
In any case, if something like this have happened in either the Black Sea or the Mediterranean Sea, there's no guarantee that this have happened suddenly and abruptly. I might as well have been a process taking many years.

I am also intrigued by the idea of Atlantis being under the Antarctic glacial sheet, because South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia are equally accessible from Antarctica. Besides, there is a medieval map that accurately outlines the coast of Antarctica as it exists beneath the ice cover (verified by satellite imagery), when Antarctica had not yet been discovered. There was a pre-Greek society that was destroyed by a cataclysm--the Minoans. The geolocial evidence points to a volcanic eruption and subsequent tidal wave. Ouch.

Any links to a picture of this medieval map showing the Antarctican coastline, perhaps?
Antarctica has been frozen for a long time, and it seems unlikely that someone would keep a map around showing it's coastline. Heck, it's unlikely that such a map would even exist. [ 11-18-2004, 01:59 PM: Message edited by: Stratos ]
