If I was you I would go for:

You - mage
Jaheira - fighter/druid
Xan - enchanter
Dynaheir - invoker
Branwen - cleric
Minsc - ranger (need some brute strength, after all)

He already DOES have some brute strength--Any Cleric or Fighter/Druid (and maybe even straight Druid) can wear the Gauntlets of Ogre Power. And he might also take Ajantis along for a party leader.....he CAN cast spells, after all.

That is an interesting question...
I am 25yrs. old, and have been playing the BG series since I bought the original BG 1 year and maybe 5 months ago.

Ok, so I'm newish to BG. Am I the *only* one to not have a magic user in a successful party?!? Right now I have two parties going--one with 4 people (f/t, t, f, and r) and one with 6(r/c, t, f, r, c, f/d)which needs to be pared down a little. Both are *very* strong parties, altho I prefer the non-magic one.

My (know-it-*all*, computer literate) 14 yr old snickers and tells me it's because I don't know how to use the spells right and that's why I avoid the mages/clerics. Not so! But I will admit using magic in RL is a whole lot easier.........

Just wondering.

I suppose one can build a brute-force-only party and still do well, but there are just SOME fights where you want to summon a few monsters or skeletons to slow the bad guys down, or maybe you'll want to cast Haste or Stinking Cloud. I personally would not make a party without at least half a Mage and half a Cleric or Druid. (I actually prefer half of a Mage to a full one--a Thief/Mage kicks ass over a true-class magic-user.)

First up i'd like to say jeez u gonna need some determination to do the all magic user party Larry_OHF, I dont think i'd try that one (for the while at least)

And second up I'd have to agree with six half mages are way better than pure mages though i prefer fighter/mages especially if you give them all the right equipment

Tell us if you complete this one......

I for one will give you much respect for completing the game with no tanks in your party.

Larry, might I just say that you are very brave for attempting this. I considered doing this, but came only close. My party was:
Me (mage/thief)
Xan
Edwin
Quayle
Ajantis
Minsc

If I were you I would replace Ajantis and Minsc with Imoen (since you're gonna use her anyway) and Dynaheir and my mage/thief for your pure mage (although a mage/thief is better in my opinion). Quayle is also a decent cleric especially if you give him the ring of holiness. This party will probably be very argumentative and disagreeable but it IS really funny to listen to and it doesn't really affect the functionality of you party.

Best of luck!
